our political representatives are also talking about passing a bill to limit oil company prices. both these things were tried under Jimmy Carter with disastrous results. these folks never seem to learn from past mistakes or maybe we elect people with very limited knowledge or thought process.

I see NO reason to lower speed limits solely for MPG. Now, if there is a safety concern then by all means negotiate it. But for MPGs! I chose to go over 55(mostly legal 😁😬) and I CHOSE to use more fuel. If someone WANTS to go 55 in a 70 zone, then they CAN. Don't FORCE me into it however! SMDH

I remember driving from Illinois to Colorado in the summer of 1979. 55 MPG, a smokie every few miles, small town speed traps all over the place. It was a miserable drive both ways.

And 55 actually means more accidents because people are on the road longer. Maybe less deadly accidents, but more of them.
One of the lessons learned from the first time they tried it.🙄
And the big trucks have trouble finding the right gears to make good mileage.

Most passenger vehicles today have overdrive. At 55, there will be a lot of shifting in and out of overdrive. This wouls actually use more gas because of higher rpm, especially in hill country.

In Ohio for as long as I can remember the speed limit on state and county roads is 55 MPH unless it is 4 lanes.

AND what is sad is Jimmy was smarter than most of them clowns we have in charge today.

I remember in September, 1973, my cousin and I rode a Honda 350 motorcycle 450 miles in one day to a family get-together (225 up, 225 back). The speed limit was 80 or 85 mph on I-80 and we were wide open all the way. We were following my folks in their '69 Pontiac Bonneville which loved to cruise at 85 and couldn't keep up. So I am thinking the limit dropped in '74, maybe? I think when they lowered the limit it was touted as a temporary deal, maybe for a year. We all know how long that 'year' became. I think gas was around 50 cents a gallon.
