I have seen similar photos on the internet but never 1st hand

Yup, mammatus clouds, called such because they remind us of udders. Then again, since we're men, it doesn't take much to remind us of boobs.

Growing up in Texas I often saw them AFTER a thunderstorm had passed by.
They mean there's still a lot of energy up there but not enough to cause trouble.
Which is not really good news if you're standing in a field of wheat beat into the mud by the thunderstorm.
