    In years past, we've seen these "swarms" down here in North Texas.

    They're not kiddin'........about slick spots. Squishy time!!!!

    I did draw the line though......when it came to having to share a table with them at my favorite Tex-Mex restaurant.

    The Mormon cricket is actually not atrue cricket, but rather a shield-backed katydid. The common name derives from this pest's invasion of the crops of Mormon settlers in the Salt Lake area in the mid-1800s. The male of this species chirps (much like a cricket), hence the incorrect common name.

    Which leads to this.

    Why is Utah State Bird a seagull?

    The California gull is considered the state bird of Utah by common consent, probably in commemoration of the fact that these gulls saved the people of the State by eating up hordes of crickets which were destroying the crops in 1848.

    Never encountered Mormon Crickets, but did drive thru corn country in North Kansas at night- had windshield so smeared with Miller Moths I could not see the road.

    Hint- don't try hanging your head out the window!

    I have collected Mormon Crickets, but never saw such numbers. Rode the bike down though eastern Colorado from Sidney, Nebraska into New Mexico. It rained 3/4 inch ants the whole way.

    a ex BIL his and my sisters ( RIP ) 1st place they bought had a old storm shelter root cellar build into a embankment all out of concrete. it was full of them ( crickets ) 1st time any of us had ever seen one like that we thought it was some rare bug just discovered at first 😮

    but its the only place around here I have ever seen any of them
