I've heard it said that the native Americans used to raise their hand upon greeting someone new, to see if they had 6 fingers on their hand. That's speculatory mostly. Anyhow, this seems interesting.

They raised a hand to show it held no weapon. Generally speaking the Bible is a poor historical record. As an example, at the time Joshua was supposed to have fought "The battle of Jerico," Jerico had actually been a ruin for several centuries.
