Marvin left school at 18 to enlist in the United States Marine Corps on August 12, 1942. He served in the 4th Marine Division as a sniper in the Pacific Theater during World War II.[6] While serving as a member of "I" Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, he was wounded in action on June 18, 1944, during the assault on Mount Tapochau in the Battle of Saipan, during which most of his company were casualties.[7] He was hit by machine gun fire, which severed his sciatic nerve,[8] and then was hit again in the foot by a sniper.[9] After over a year of medical treatment in naval hospitals, Marvin was given a medical discharge with the rank of private first class. He previously held the rank of corporal, but had been demoted for troublemaking.[9]
Marvin's decorations include the Purple Heart Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

I always enjoyed his movies
A lot of the old actors had send in the military some I did not realize until the last few years .that made me like them that much more

I recall Lee Marvin on the cover of an old Guns magazine.
It was a good picture of him.......sporting a freshly made "Weatherby Eyebrow".
Most certainly........a guy's guy.

He was an Ex-Marine and anti-Vietnam War. Palimony court case started a trend of law suits. Rights of girl friends. PTSD and alcohol problem. Heavy biker role in 1953 "The Wild One" with Marlin Brando.

Emperor of the North pole and Death Hunt are 2 other in my top 30 favorite movies.
I saw him interviewed and he said he go shot in the butt.

The mention of Cat Ballou reminds me of something I wondered from when I saw the movie 55 years ago. How did they get that horse to lean against the store wall with Lee on the saddle?

One of my favorite Lee Marvin movies is "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"
Also with Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, and Vera Miles in it. I remember going to the old (now gone) Michigan Theater in downtown Traverse City Mi. to watch it back when it first came out.
Marvin had a way about him that even playing the bad guy, I would sure like to have sat down with a beer with him!

Landumc goes there on YouTube has tons of videos on Lee Marvin. Lee was quite the drinker. He was also a stickler for firearms accurately being portrayed for the time period of his movies.

between Death Hunt and that movie where he and a Japanese castaway were both stranded on the Pacific island, were my favorites.
