9000’ with a light sprinkle of rain. Pushing yearlings to another grazing area.
The cabin on the extreme right was one of the first, if not the first on the ‘plateau’ when the Ute Indians were moved off by the government. Rancher buddy built a protective roof over the cabin in an effort to protect from snow load.
The yellow flowers(mule ear) have a seed pod when mature, much like oats, that’s pretty tasty to the cattle.

Yeah ,,,,,,, there was 30-35 head in the trees to the right of the cabin when we came through with the horses. They pay little attention to the ‘bell’ horses that graze there. Lots of bear and mule deer around there.

Interesting the cattle like the seed heads. I have mules ear in the front yard and you could scour pots with the leaves and stems.

Good thing I wasn't there I would of not left till just before the snow started. Which can be pretty early at that altitude. Beautiful country thanks for sharing, and making me miss it even more!

Susie, not sure I understand your question. The cow camp is 500 privately owned acres, surrounded by 1.5 million acres of national forest/BLM. Elk have been there since they were driven from the ‘plains’ by western expansion in the 1700/1800 hundred’s. The cattle are on government leases owned by my buddy. Takes many days by horseback in the fall to gather and drive them down the mountain. He has 5 black mouth curs that are invaluable at gathering time.
The elk drift down the mountain when heavy snow arrives in the fall.
