Sling question for CMP service rifle.

So the rules state that for AR pattern service rifle matches the sling must either be 8 (+-.5) inches from magwell for m-4 and 13(+-.5) inches from magwell for m-16 configuration. My question is...what about the 18 inch barrels? Does it matter? Can I just pick one? Help would be appreciated.
