another AC question.
has anyone had their expansion valve replaced lately. ballpark on what that should cost, 7 year old unit. my estimate is $2100.00 seems a bit much but i really have no idea.

Angie's list says from $200 to $700. If I were you, I'd call around for estimates. That sounds really high!

Wow.....sounds a bit high. It's been many years, but the last "bad" expansion valve I ran across, had a plugged inlet screen.
Your evaporator not getting cold? First thoughts are proper freon charge.......proper/sufficient air flow through evaporator/entire house.
Surely your A/C tech has already checked these, and other things. But then, I'm not there.

Prob not far off if dealing with a large company that charges "by the book". Ask for the cost of a new air handler, assuming its a split.
TXVs are a lot of work, but if it is an air handler, then no need to charge for freon(you simply pump it to the condesing unit). If its a package, then yes it has to come out.
Get several quotes before saying yes, maybe a reputable small company would save him 7-8 hundred bucks!
Those prices are including labor, which is probably 75% of that quote!

Last one we had problems with I tapped on it with a screwdriver handle and it worked for 10 more years.

LMAO, hey.....if it works it works! I had a friend/neighbor that relied on an ancient Sears window unit(it was prob 25 years old). It quit working one summer. I checked it for them, compressor locked up! I said, time for a new one and they got their monies worth from that one. He said last time it acted that way, they just slammed it into the window and it worked.
I slid it out a few inches, slammed it back into the case(a few times) and I was amazed as the compressor kicked back ON! Worked for another 4 years after that. His wife passed, then the ac sprung a bad leak(cond coil destroyed). We helped him get another one, newer model from Sears😁
Sadly he has passed on now, well sad for us.....they are in a better place now! RIP!
