Heat pump help, please
When we got home yesterday, the AC was off. No fan, outside unit not running. I cannot find a reset anywhere. The circuit board on the outside unit has two red LED'S flashing alternately.
I've cycled the power a couple of times.
Any help before I call the service guy?

My unit won't work if the batteries in thermostat are bad,, simple check before calling also don't you want this in the GD forum Jim?

Is it a split unit (airhandler inside, condesing unit outside) or a package unit (all outside)?
Will the evap(indoor) fan run if you turn the fan to "on" at the thermostat?
There should also be a legend on the cover to tell you what the alternating red lights mean. Let us know.
My SWAG, without more info, would be either a capacitor or contactor. Need a little more info first tho.

I would turn everything off... thermostat and main breaker. Leave it set for 15 min.. change out the batteries in the thermostat and flip the breaker on.. and turn on the thermostat. If that fails.. take a voltage tester and see if the unit is getting 240 V to it. Could be your breaker to the unit is faulty or possibly one of the fuses on the disconnect ..if it has fuses.

Split unit. Air handler doesn't run . Pan float switch is good.

Check the voltage to the outside unit , If it is getting 240 the start capacitor on air handler blower motor.

Also check for bugs (ants) in contacts on outside unit.

I would check the capacitor first.They tend to be the first thing to go when a unit is worked hard in hot weather.If it is swelled,bottom bulged or the wire connection are tilted away from each other is a sure sign.I bought one a couple of months ago and they are about 20 bucks.

Does the outside unit run, after you reset the power? Outside will run even if the inside has a bad capapcitor or fan. It will shut off(hopefully) pretty quick due to low suction pressure switch.
If none are working, check the 24v transformer in the air handler (could have a 3 amp fuse blown, some have no fuse and simply blows up the transformer.)
Transformer should ouptut 24v on the red(most times) wire. Either way, "R" to "C" at the thermostat should show 24volts.

Service guy just left. Air handler fan motor shot. They'll order one tomorrow and get it in Tuesday or Wednesday.
Warranty will cover parts and I'll have to pay labor.
It doesn't have the old capacitor start motor, but a high tech variable speed motor with electronic internals.

Living in North Texas is a good reason for me to keep some serious spare parts. A hard lesson I learned about 10 years ago.
One of my "spares" is the entire fan/blower motor..........heck, I even have an extra 5 ton dual capacity compressor.
BTW........it was 108 degrees yesterday.
Glad you got an A/C tech so quickly. My last go-round would have taken 3 days.
Still wondering what code your red lights were flashing.

Be GLAD the warranty covers the parts. Those integrated blowers are EXPENSIVE and they are all crap. I hate those blowers.

Fully agree!
The old ones I've worked on showed mechanical failures at both the internal circuit boards and internal/external recepticals and plugs. Probably vibration induced over time.
BTW.......I'd also ask the tech to clean the blower vanes(it doesn't take much dust build-up, to drastically affect air flow), before reassembly. Heck.....he's gonna be right there, anyway.

Goodman came with a 10 yr warranty on our 5 ton air handler ..if it goes out someone elses problem. We will most likely leave the home by then.. I know our cooling bill is considerably less...

97 degrees Friday afternoon, and the thermostat was glowing red! I checked the readout and it showed condensate drain blocked. Thought I'd do the easy things first, so disconnected the drain, made an adaptor, and blew 125 lbs of air in it, voila! cleared the line. I poured 1/2 cup of bleach and 2 cups of water in, and will wait until cooler weather to completely clean it out.
The temp in the house only got up to 78* before I got it running.
