I wonder how many folks put them in .40S&W?

They're going to need a bigger sign to include .38 Special, .38 Super, .38 S&W as well as 9mm Parabellum, 9mm Largo, 9mm Makrov, and all the many .300s, 7mms and more.

Don't laugh- we found some REALLY strange looking brass on the firing line. Youngster had been shooting 7.62 NATO in an M1 Garand.

One of the perennial magazine articles used to be "Cartridge Confusions" in which some unlucky writer is tasked with warning new shooters about similar-sounding but incompatible cartridge/gun combinations.

Alternatively, when ammo is hard to find, there's the "Cartridge Substitutions" piece which describes what "incorrect" ammo can be more or less safely fired in a given gun in dire circumstances. One such (which I have verified) is firing .38 Super ammo in a .357 Magnum. The Super has a semi-rimmed case, which will hold the round just enough to allow the primer to be struck, provided the chambers are on the snug side. Another, again with a semi-rimmed case, is firing .32 ACP in a .32 S&W/Federal/H&R, etc revolver. Workable if really needed but not for everyday use.

Twice at the range I had to assist customers that shot 9mm in a 40. Once in a M&P and once in a Glock. Surprised me they could get it to work and it splits and sticks the case nicely in the chamber. So I guess nothing about that sign surprises me. Remember, if the average IQ is 100 there are just as many below that average as above it. Bob

I feel his pain. If I get one more person asking for "17 ammo" and not knowing which one he has I think I'm gonna lose it.

    Second most irritating is "45".

Or the fact that somewhere along the line people have shortened "22 long rifle" known as 22lr down to "22 long". Probably due to actual "22 long" not being very popular nowadays but really makes me regret even having "22 long" on the shelf as so many people buy it then bring it back complaining it doesn't work in their 22lr semi auto like it's my fault they're idiots.

How many gang bangers do you get asking for "380 bullets"? And when you ask them if they mean bullets or ammo, they insist they want bullets. So you sell them a box of 90-gr JHPs only to have them come back in 10 minutes pissed because "these won't fit my gun."
