my mother is wanting a new conventional type riding lawnmower
I would go look at Craftsman if they were still making them
any suggestions ?

I believe the Snappers are still pretty good mowers I cut a lot of yards with that rear engine model they have

ZTrak 42-inch Zero-Turn Lawn Mower ($2,999 at Lowe’s) Bob Villa says one of those are at the top for price range. My step daughter bought one in April, I have had to put the belt on twice because she likes to run over water meter libs but seems to start and cut real nice so far.

John Deere with a Kawasaki or Briggs Vanguard engine. Go to a John Deere dealer or find a good used one. The ones at the box stores are not the same quality.

My Son builds Country Clipper zero turn mowers. Their Avenue homeowner grade mowers are pretty good and share some of the upgrades of the commercial type mowers.
IMHO, Craftsman products are no better than any other 'box store' stuff.

Johndeere from a dealer . Big box onesare built with bushings instead of bearings . Quill assembly are sealed bearings that are not readily greasable . Deck metal is thinner .

Ryobi has a reasonably priced 30” battery powered model (under $3,000). Larger models are also available. We’re I looking for one for an older lady, I would seriously consider electric for maintenance and convenience.

We have a cub cadet about 6 or 7 yrs old
Just changed belts only issue we have had but we did mow Gass taller than normal not good on belts
My youngest son bought a zero turn John deere .it seems to be a good mower also I only used it once but he had had it About three years no problems
Agree we have had a few craftsman mowers in the past they price was always a big part of it but they seem to wear out fairly quick .but I would wager same place makes the house brands for big box stores or even big name mowers to sell on the lower end using there brand name as a selling point

since Husqvarna bought out American Yard Products, most consumer quality lawnmowers are built by them. find one the color you like and with the features you want. Lowes is as good a place as any and if you know someone who is active or retired military you can get a discount.

I have never owned anything but simplicity, though they are not what they used to be, but still service/guarantee their own mowers...... currently still using a broadmore series from the late 80's, 14hp

I totally agree about the Simplicity riding mowers! I had mine for over 20 years and retired it about 3 years ago. It was a 16 horse Regent. Made the mistake and replaced it with a Huskaverna (sp) in 24 horse. It is a dog in comparison!

I was at the Ryobi company store in Anderson SC and the lawn maintaince guys were using battery powered zero turns.The blades were spinning so fast they were about as noisy as a gas powered mower.

I would suggest that since it's for a female operator you might want to collect some advice from a female who already knows from experience.
Why, because several of the lawn mowers/lawn tractors are not going to be liked by a woman.
If their is any sloping ground do not get a zero turn.
The type mowers with the electric PYO and the Hydrostatic drive with the Forward/Reverse shuttle clutch on the floor board is user friendly. If small yard or lots of narrow places to mow get the samller deck around 42 inch. Might even considering taking mom with you and let her take a seat on the mower.
I repair and sell lawn tractor/garden tractor mowers and a woman called me few days ago looking for a riding mower. After I ask her a few questions about herself and what she had to mow I did not have a mower for that female operator. Some riding mowers are user friendly for a female operator but most are not.

That 240 with Kawasaki power is a good choice.I have a 277 AWS . Run non ethonol gas,keep it clean and stored out of the weather and they will give good service for a long time. Okie I didnt know you were a mechanic.I have a commercial zero turn with an electrical problem that is kicking my butt. I may need some advice.

I have had a Craftsman riding mower for years.
It likes mowing so much that I can no longer disengage the cutting blades.
The lever moves but it does not want to disengage.

I had a Sears electric years ago. Ran on three deep cycle batteries. Had a fair size motor for drive and two smaller ones (not small, just smaller) on the deck. Picked it up at an estate auction for $85 and it had a 48" snow blade and tire chains.
That thing would do the work of lawn tractors twice its size. Plus, I could mow my yard after work on Thursday. I didn't get off work 'til 10:30pm on Thurs..
