That was one dirty .22 rifle
I go through a lot of patches, but I refuse to send out a dirty gun. I think this old girl was shot with coal instead of gunpowder.

Looks like a classic instance of "WD-40ism".
I don't know how many .22 rifles and pistols I cleaned out that had so much "road tar" in them they would no longer function. Every time, the owner said he couldn't understand why it got that way because he sprayed it with WD every time he shot it. Not one of them would believe that was in fact the problem.

Many years ago I found out what WD-40 does to a revolver when you soak it and put it away for a year. I had to heat it up with a hair dryer before I could tap it open with a hammer handle.

I see a lot of green on those patches, mind if I ask you what you used to clean the bore with. Looks like a lot of copper wash was left in the bore over time. Hard to beat JB bore cleaner on really dirty barrels.

I use Hoppes for most everything. There is a large bottle of Butch's Bore Shine there on the shelf, but I work in a windowless office and that stuff is STRONG!!
I do keep a large tube of Flitz so I do use that sometimes, but it is messy.

I have cleaned a few guns for co workers
And had similar piles of nasty patches and swabs amazing how some people just have no clue and treat ther gun as as a shovel or boat padle .
Speaking of wd40 my youngest son had a high-school buddy whos granddad had some nice guns well they use to be but had them in a old gun cabinet upstairs no heat and windows broken out of the room yes they were that way
and grandpa could not climb the stairs any more So his grandson was given the job to take care of the guns
My son told me he was there once when granddad had the kid clean the guns and check on them
My son said they went up stairs the kid opened up the cabinet doors and just hosed evey thing including the cabnet with a can of wd40 .did not take out a single gun just sprayed it allin place unknown how many tiimes he had done it over time
My son said the guns looked like one huge pile of sticky rusty mess as did the cabinet
He did not say any thing ,but told me some day grandpa was going to be one mad disappointed old fellow when he found out what the kid had been doing for years cleaning and wiping down his guns

no this is dirty.......... I need to research this a little more but the story is true. My son and his huntin buddy duck and goose hunt A LOT. Buddy tells me last year this shotgun was nothing but problems and more problems. It is an inertia driven semi auto in 20ga. I tell his buddy if its still under warranty send it back. I won't divulge the manufacturer cuz I still need to get to the bottom of the story. The gun comes back on the buddies dime and the service department says there is nothing wrong. They come back this past weekend and the buddy is irate and says the gun is a piece of crap and is ready to sell it. I talk them into letting me take a look at it and yesterday this is what I found. There are more pictures but these tell the story.

Just bought a Savage .32 auto pistol, 100+ yrs old- for a song. The slide could not be fully retracted. What I could see was dirtier than a coal mine. Finally dunked the complete pistol in the ultrasonic for a half hour- cleared enough to let me field strip it- and back into the bath. Cleaned up well, shoots well. Yeah, it's a .32 ACP- but 10 rounds. Why people think that a piece of machinery never needs cleaning or maint. is beyond me.
