    That's probably the bolt handle from the model 60. Those slide leftward when the bolt is retracted so the small lug opposite the trigger-shaped handle could lock into a small depression in the receiver.

    The automatic Marlin Model 60 bolt hold open stops the bolt when it is halfway to battery. If you want the bolt to be held open in the fully rearward position you have to pull it back and slide the operating handle, pictured above in the OP, to the left, while holding the bolt fully retracted.
