sitting here thinking it just doesn't seem like christmas, mom passed about 10 years ago and I haven't had a date cookie, or custard pie since. I wouldn't know where to begin to make her cookies but googled a few custart pie recipes and thought why not! got two in the oven right now, I know things are never as good as "Mom" used to make, but I would be happy if it is close.......... she used to also love buttermilk pie, but I didn't have the buttermilk handy or any coconut so its just plain custard....

I remember my mom's Sunday afternoon dinners. Always a roast, ham or fowl with ALL the trimmings. I don't know if I miss the memory or the dinners the most.

My Mom wasn't a great cook. She was a single mom and did her best.
She made a few things really well, and my wife still uses some of those recipes.

mom kept us fed best she could
most of my life it was potatoes , corn bread ,pinto ( soup ) beans and chicken pork chops once a week , were normal she had yrs of practice making them 😁 no one ever visited my parents house with out being fed or ask if they wanted any thing to eat it may not have been much but every one got to eat .
I do miss her and dad
my inlaws also may they all RIP
my MIL we teased about inventing the blacked slightly burnt food craze
but they also never turned any one away hungry
southern hospitality at its best from both sides of the family
lucky for me my wife is a good cook and did not follow in her moms foot steps

I recently discovered buttermilk pies and have made em three times in the last few months. They are great!

One of the best compliments I ever overheard my Mom make was about 6 years ago after making a nice meal at her house for several people, (Fresh caught Rainbow Trout, (by my Son.) stuffed with lemon slices, laid over a bed of Asparagus, in EVOO and a smidge of water to steam the veggies, then butter over all. Salt/pepper etc. Baked in the oven.)
Mom - "He's a better cook than I am." 😁
(And) She was a very good cook. 🤔
I have spent some time cooking in some very nice restaurants after getting out of the Army, while putting myself through College. Prep, Broiler, Fry, Sautee', Expeditor, Line Supervisor, Kitchen Manager, etc. I like to cook.
My Son paid me the same compliment about 3-5 years after my Ex and I seperated. "Dad, I wish Mom could cook like you do." 😉😁😂 My Son is carrying on the tradition, (learned from me) and is a very good cook in his own right.

My mom liked to cook with wine. Sometimes she'd even put it in the food! She had a bit of a drinkin' problem but she really was a good cook and taught me to read, write, and do basic arithmetic before I hit first grade.

My grandmother and mother used to make a hot vanilla custard that would be spooned over fresh yellow cake and topped with shredded coconut.
I have tried to make the vanilla custard many times and never got it right.
I wish I had gotten them to write down the recipe.

My Mom was the oldest of 13 children. She helped Gramma in the kitchen from very early on and became a great cook. Being Czech, there was always some kind of pastry baking, and her cream-filled ones were legendary. And her dumplings!
She also made a baked mac and cheese that nobody has been able to get near much less duplicate.

My Mom made a bread pudding and I never saw her measure any of the ingredients. She worked with what she had. I think it was a Great Depression thing...
