I have fired one of the "machine guns" in question. He had a WWII Thompson M1A1, for $1.00 a round he would let anyone take it into the range in the back of the store, under supervision if course. I have to say it was well worth the $20.00.

Way back when Sheriff Duffy was in office (long since passed away), he sent a letter to the ATF that most of the shotguns (870 Remington) had to have the barrels shortened to fit in the new patrol cars that had been ordered.

Several months passed and no response from ATF.

The Sheriff sent another letter. No response.

The Sheriff sent another letter letting the ATF the barrels had been shortened, and letting them know that if they had a problem, that the 1500 deputy sheriffs would be glad to stand in front of the Sheriff if they choose to take action.

The next day the Sheriff received a letter approving the barrels being shortened.

Shot an old Thompson. Very clunky and mechanical compared to todays (smaller caliber) autos.

Iowa? What is going on? A County Emergency Management Coordinator is in hot water here for selling an agency F-350 diesel pickup to a friend's auto business for $800 and then buying it himself the same day for $800. It had some rust and 125K miles but it would still be worth $15K easily. He has resigned but charges are pending. Keokuk County has less than 10,000 people and doesn't even need an emergency management coordinator!
