I once visited Yellowstone back in '96. Drove all over the place and never did find the volcano.

Brookwood, that's because it was under you. The whole darn park sets on a volcano and it's waiting to pop!

It won't happen in my or any of our lifetimes. It will, but there will be years of warning.

Anyone know the approx. elevation of Yellowstone? I could look it up but then I wouldn't up my post count.

The surface of Yellowstone Lake (which is in the volcano's caldera) is 7742 ft MSL.

I remember being at Old Faithful the first time. There was several people waiting for it to erupt. I remember we joked about someone going to tell the Park Ranger that we were ready for him to flip the switch.(-:

The gloom & doom predictions assume that the volcanic release will be a sudden explosion such as Mt. St. Hellen a while ago. But since the are is so large, there is a good chance it would be a much slower, much longer timed release of lava. If that happens, hopefully it will flow downhill all the way to San Francisco.

I live less than 100 miles from Mount Lassen (active volcano 1912) and Mount Shasta, ( I like their root beer) and I ain't skeered of neither one of 'em. Washington D.C. don't have no active volcanoes, But they scare me most of all.

The hot spot that is now under Yellowstone was once under New Mexico. We have a lot of lava, several buttes which are volcano cores. and a couple of mountains in the 10,000 range. 4 volcanos sit on we west side of Albuquerque. None here was a huge blow, but the fires must have been huge.

We should tap the whole shebang for geothermal power production. The heat from the core is a lot more reliable for power generation than Unicorn farts and fairy dust the greenies are proposing.

I guess we are 2.5 times more screwed. (?)

@He Dog, my Brother and his Wife live in Farmington. (I helped drive them cross-country from Richmond, when they moved.)

If it erupts all the libbies will first rejoice because the cloud will block the sun worldwide for a couple of years and reverse global warming. But after a couple of months of cold weather and no solar power they will then be fighting over oil and gas to survive. There just ain't no way to make those lib greenie weenies happy!. Bob
