Before you take the bolt out, put the safety in the straight up position. Then remove the bolt.

The bolt is cocked and in the safety off position. Put the bolt back in the rifle, then put the safety in the straight up position between fire and safe. Then take the bolt out and start disassembly again.

Remember you have to push the plunger in when unscrewing the firing pin assembly out.

Hook the little piece of the striker that contacts the sear on the edge of a piece of wood and pull the striker back as far as needed to engage the safety.

That worked BUT now the striker is on the bottom and wont go into rifle-Its hitting on the rear of receiver. Ive got something together wrong. Thx

Sometimes due to wear or mis-fit, the striker can turn a bit too far. I've seen some hard used 98's that has serious wear on various parts that required some 'fiddling' to get things right. Try backing the striker off until it aligns correctly, install it in the receiver, and see if the safety will engage properly.

I haven't has a Mauser in my hands for a long time so I'm trying to dig up all the memories and it's tough digging.
