Just checking in......................
Been awhile since I stopped by. Am working on trying to slow down, pull back from the retail world and just do gunsmithing and maybe get a few more hunts and a bit more fishing with the boys before the bus quits stopping by in the morning. Seems I have more on my plate than ever before. OK in some ways, but.........
Been a pretty mild winter here in SE WI. Last Thursday, got about 6 plus inches of snow with a wind, so had a few drifts. First time I've had to shovel my way to get to the shop door in years. AND, of course our big snow blower just had to bust a drive belt. Got a great neighbor about a mile down the road with a skid-steer that has a blade, he came and plowed the drive. He won't ever take any money for any thing I have ever asked him to do, so he found a case of his favorite beer by his door the next day.
We are doing pretty well. Younger son still has the bullet in his shoulder. He saw the doctor 2 weeks ago, as his arm will get a sharp pain once in awhile. Doctor says the bullet is pushing on some nerves. So the doctor is looking over the scan and going to come up with how to dig it out. I've offer to give him 3 fingers of good bourbon, lay a bag of ice on the shoulder for about 20 minutes, a new blade in the razor knife, put a Kabar in the fire, make a slit, a pair of small Snap-on needle nose pliers, pull the bullet out, pour a bottle of iodine in the cut and then slap the red hot blade of the Kabar on it and all is well. When I told him this, he said that I was off my nut. Really?
Didn't get much hunting time in this year. The days I had planned to go, the weather was against me. Did get a button buck. 'da wife came up with a recipe for Texas steak chili. So I cubed up some of that buck, she went to the little Mexican store in town and got some peppers that I'd never heard of and other spices and WOW, the best chili I've ever had. And, no, there were no beans.
Last year was my busiest year for 'smithing. The safes are pretty full right now, guns waiting for work. Still is a pain locating some parts, and boy do some places think that Remington parts are made of gold! I enjoy doing it. Also did pretty good over on the auction side.
Looking forward to spring. Going to add a few more raised growing beds to the garden. We were given a nice wooden shed, 12' X 24', hip roof with 8' center ceiling. The owner even flat bedded it in for us, no charge. He had sold his place and the new owner didn't want it. We ain't run any chickens for years now. The old coop was in poor shape and not worth redoing. Going to make this into a new coop. The roof is solid, but needs shingling. We had already planned on getting chickens again, even before the price of eggs went nuts.
I hope this find ever one doing OK and I'll try to come around more often.

@jimdeere I believe his son was shot by a friend/hunting buddy? in a negligent discharge IIRC.

Stop!!! Don't you realize you'll screw up the blade on the Kabar getting it that hot? That is what they make the cheap Chinese knives for. Use one of them, they never hold an edge anyway.😁
Glad everything else is going o.k. I've got a niece up in Stevens Point and they have had a bit of snow this winter. Not sure what the total turned out to be but 12" - 18" was forecasted this week. Sounds like you have got some good neighbors and that is a blessing. Bob

12x24? That shed is a real score! A few years ago a buddy was moving so gave me a good deal on his 10x14 hand-built shed: $1000 and I had to move it 40 miles. He did help me move it by driving ahead with his flashers going so someone didn't fly over a hill and get a surprise.

Last time I posted was 6/26/22. I posted about our 35 anniversary. About an hour later, my younger son, was shot by his best friend, who has handled guns most of his adult life, got careless / stupid / negligent and was about to go out back of the shop and shoot some guns with my son. He had one of my S&W revolvers in .32, loaded with .32 Shorts, when for God only knows, he went and pulled the trigger to feel what the DA was like. The bullet hit my son low in the neck, collapsed the carotid artery, bounced off a vertebra, cracking it in his neck then slide across his collar bone.
The First Responders that came were the greatest I have ever know. He was taken to a trauma center in Milwaukee. He under went surgery to place a stent in the carotid artery, as the inner lining did not fully reopen. They left the bullet where it is, because of placing him in a neck brace. They are going to look to remove it later this month. You can see it just under the shin.
3 days in I.C.U. and then a regular room for a few days. We turned our living room into a bedroom, so he didn't have to deal with stairs.
He is doing very well. Out of the neck brace. Says his neck hurts some, but the bullet just under the skin is bugging him. He is back to work, light duty.
His best friend feels like a piece of s**t.
The officers went over everything, no charges or confiscation and I do not know just what the official report said, but the one officer I know said to me the next day, " That was your classic f**k up if there ever was one."
I wanted to come and ask you guys for prayers, but was thinking, "oh great, the gunsmith's kid gets shot with one of his own guns." I just didn't want to put this on the inter-net, but then little sister and a few friends did on FB. I knew you guys would pray, so I carried that thought.
Needless to say, we put our 35th. anniversary off. We'll do something later, just praising God we have our son.
