Had to replace router and earnet cable today. Had a Netgear nighthawk 2600, 5 yrs. old.
Replaced with Netgear Nighthawk 5400. Yes it has linus OS, and stardust spyware built in, no need for downloads. Wife got it up and running for me. Our wireless devices just automatically re-connected to the new router, happy about that.
Was told that routers are only to last 3-4 yrs. WTH???

Yep, always "rent" them when possible. That way they get replaced for free with they go bad, and they WILL go bad!

Well, that's an option. But if they charge you only $5 a month, in less than two years you've paid more than a medium-good router of your own.

My bill for landline phone and high speed is up to $84 a month. They've replaced the router at least twice in 12 years.

That's about what we're paying also.

I took my last store bought router out to the garage and gave it a good blast of compressed air. Got another 2 years service out of it and put it away in a closet when I subscribed to HughesNet and got one of theirs. I now pay rent for it.
I pay 115.00 a month for internet and landline. TV has been free with my antenna (35 channels) since I cut the cord with Dish 6 years ago.

Working or not, you should replace a router every few years just to keep up with new security protocols. And to take advantage of any speed improvements the old one wasn't built for. You can find routers from $40 to $5000 but one in the $100 range is sufficient for home use. current one is a TP Link 0710, and I'm very happy with it.

You'd get much better service out of any router if you ran Linux on your computers instead of Windows, but y'all are tired of hearing me say that.
