Which one of the big bands was your favorite??
I'm guessing that many of our parents made certain we got to listen to a lot of music from the Big Band era!
All through the 50s my dad had the Big Band sound coming from our stereo everyday!
My favorite bands were Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. I really liked Benny Goodman when he had Peggy Lee as his singer!!
So what bands were your favorites??

I like drums so hard to beat Benny Goodman's "Sing, Sing, Sing and Big John's Special." Count Basie's early band was good also.

The big band era was before my time, too, but, as a trombonist in HS and college, I liked Tommy Dorsey. Especially the Yes Indeed album A couple of my band directors who were also trombone majors threatened to wrap my horn around my neck if I didn't stop trying to get that sweet Dorsey sound, though. Al Hirt and Doc Severenson were the contemporary heroes of me and my buddies. Saw Al in concert once. What a showman.

First thing that comes to my mind is Tommy Dorsey and his band.
Had a tabby cat named Tabby Dorsey. My favorite Big band era singer would have to be Bing Crosby.

I cant say i have a favorite not enough experience to pick any,
I like listing to them but really don't seek them out when listing to music . growing up my parents mostly dad 110% country music ( the old country music he hated the new stuff at that was in the 1980"s LOL )
for years I only heard country and blue grass that's all my dads radio and TV played .
even if Lawrence Welk came on it lasted about two seconds before dad would mumble thats wasting TV time and the channel was changed or tv turned off 😁
thinking on it serious the old WWII movies is where I first heard any big band music

I do like to listen to a lot of Glen Millers music along with Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass.
I had to take a class back in school that was called Music Appreciation. I took it with my feet dragging at the start but soon after, I became quite the fan of a lot of different kinds of music.
Just soooo very glad that RAP had not been invented yet!!!!!!

Actually I grew up with a lot of big band music playing around my house. I still enjoy some Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey from time to time...

Definitely the Mills Brothers were my favorite. My favorite song from them was, Cab Driver. I was born 20 years too late.

Sometimes when I need to remember my Grandma.... I miss her so much. I remember Sunday evening... The news and Lawrence Welk.. Sunday never changed so the memory stays clear... Sometimes I hope if I could just get back they would be there. But they are Home. Waiting. Till we meet again.

I did enjoy seeing and hearing Cab Calloway doing his "Minnie The Moocher" accompanied by the Blues Brothers & Band. The movies have brought back some very good music from the past. A song sung by Billie Holiday, "The Very Thought of You" with an orchestral backed band really hit my internal like buttons a lot! That was from the Mel Gibson movie "Forever Young".
I did attend a concert that was held at Michigan's Interlochen Arts Academy (Music Camp) with an enjoyable evening with Duke Ellington back in the early 70's. My late MIL worked at the camp in the housekeeping department and cleaned Ellington's room. She told me that he wore the most worn out shoes she had ever seen! 😁

we must have had the same grandparents!!!☺️. God I miss them so much. I was so blessed to also have both my "great grandparents", well into my twenties. My son got to meet his great, great grandparents, on my mothers side!!!! He was three when they both passed.

Just laying here in bed trying to sleep thinking about music while reading this post and how varied it is
And over my life have gained some aprication for most of it classic country blues blue grass big band. And so much more
However the trend of what ever its called using i have heard bits and pieces of mostly four letter profanity and lyrics killing cops and every one else along with slapping the .... and worse
I won't even go into one I head a few weeks ago i seen posted on a news site as being #1 that was suppose to on top of the charts by a female singing about her let's say her" cat" to be safe was well beyond any stretch of what I could call music .trust me don't look it up
I can't listen to more than few seconds of it and that's all by accident Scrolling channels or news links
I guess I must be just too old To get it
But to each their own. live and let live its enjoyed by so many obvious it is .have at it with my blessing
Funny side note as a kid l watching to the lone ranger I had no idea the theme music is a classic music arrangement untill many many years later when I found out

Speaking of classics, I was introduced to the 1812 Overture from that old TV commercial for Puffed Wheat cereal.
Some over zealous advertiser even added fresh words to the famous score! IMMIC it went kind of like; "It is the cereal that's shot from guns...." showing a cannon shot with puffed wheat exiting the barrel! 😁

I guess Pink Floyd doesn't qualify so I'll say Dizzy Gillespie. I say that because he was the only one I saw in person. I was at a supper club in Madison, WI in 1959 sitting at the bar with my aunt & uncle. Dizzy bellied up next to me during and ordered a drink. Sure wish I would have asked for an autograph. Oakie, I did like the Mills Brothers harmony.

When I was a kid Dad built 2 big speaker cabinets and filled them with speakers. Then he bought a reel to reel tape deck. Having been born in 1925, and grown up during the big band era, that was what he usually played. I didn't really appreciate it at the time, but now after all these years I rediscovered the music and loaded up my walkman with a bunch of songs from that era. My favorites are Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. I walk 2 miles a day and listen to mostly big band tunes while I'm getting some exercise.

I also really, really like Henry Mancini and Dave Brubeck. I was in a by-audition-only jazz choir for two years in HS. We did a lot of festivals, contests, and touring and I got kind of burned out on jazz by the end of it. We opened for Mel Torme in the Pantages Theatre in Tacoma, WA. I like Mel and Tony Bennett too.

Mr. P, way back in the 70s I went to the 25th anniversary tour of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Paul Desmond was dying of cancer, his clothes hung from his emaciated body. Paul would lean against a speaker, his head hanging when he wasn't playing. When it was time to play his sax an incredible change would come over him. Seeing him make love to his sax was a special moment to watch. Paul was dying but he looked like he felt he was the luckiest man in the world as long as he was playing his sax!!
I went to two different performances here in Spartanburg about 15, 20 years apart. The second performance was the first time Morello (?) the drummer didn't play with Dave as he had retired due to health issues. Dave had to be helped out on the stage to get to his piano. Once they had him seated he was just fine!! He could still play!! Grat memories!!
