My day at the range
Ever had one of those days where your brain and your body just don't connect? Today was that day for me.
I went to the outdoor range because the weather here is great and I wanted to get out to 100 yards with the AR and the Hornet. And because I'm an adult and I can do what I want (given I ask my wife first), I did exactly that.
Shooting was good. I'm still better with low power magnification (8x) at 100 yards than I am with high (14-16). Too wobbly and jittery at high magnification.
But, the most memorable part is at the end of the day where I crossed the yellow line twice while the range was cold. First time, some guys gave me a good "HEY!!!" and a grin. Second time, the range attendant says "...and when the yellow light goes out, you can go to your station. Not before, guy in the red jacket."
Guy with the red face, for sure! I've never done that before in my life and then I do it twice in a minute.
As I was leaving, the range attendant looked at me, laughing, and said "Finally, someone who can screw up as fast as me."
Hilarious stuff! Still not sure where my head went! 😂

The last outdoor range I went to had various berms at different distances. I was shooting at the 100 yard range and checked with the others on the range. Range was called cold and I headed out to change my target.
The next thing I know, the guys at the 25 yard berm opened up. Others yelled cease fire ! The three guys stopped firing and stepped back, but kept arguing it was safe because there was a berm between me and them......
A board member happened to be at the range and told them to leave. (No range office on duty) They just did not seem to get the issue.
I have ventured out by there a few times since but will wait to an off day during the week and catch the place again when NO one else is there...

while shooting at our club, I encountered the biggest idiot ever. My son was changing our targets at 100 yards, with the line being cold. We have a huge 6 foot by 6 foot sign, colored red for hot and green for cold. Each side is labeled. While he was down range with another fellow, a idiot open fires with an AR 15. I had told this guy twice about handling firearms when the range is cold. After a few choice words, I asked him and his buddies to leave. He turned and said to me, No, who the hell are you. I'm the president of the club and I will see you on the second Wednesday of the month to face the board. He never showed and was kicked out of the club.

In my defense, I was only trying to put a couple of targets away because the wind had kicked up. Guns were stored on the rack, locked up, and mags on the bench. I'd never pick one up and shoot when people were downrange. My dad would come up from the grave, give me that disappointed look, and his ghost would take my guns and put them away for a month.
Outdoor ranges are fun but I won't go to any that don't have an attendant on duty. You just never know if the other people there understand their responsibility.

That is one of the main reasons I joined a private club, public ranges are full of careless people. even with range officers some folks are just simpleminded flakes

Way too many people at ranges these days are firearms experts from playing video games or internet ,not from any sort of training on firearm safety or instruction.
