No. Sandhill cranes never roost in trees. They prefer swamps and tall grass lands, and roosting on the ground.

Me and the boss have been hearing them the last couple of days. We are supposed to get 6 - 10 inches of heavy wet snow tonight and their cries seem a bit more mournful than usual. I guess they regret rushing back here this soon. Bob

We have a Great Blue Heron that haunts our pond and other water sources around here. (Year round) Been here about 5 years now.
I love seeing him. We have made it clear to anyone that shoots on our property, if you shoot the Turtles, the Heron, etc. You will NEVER be back.
My buddy/neighbor and I share a backyard shooting range that is around and near the pond.

They have been leaving NM since mid Feb. From here they go to the San Luis Valley in Colorado. Many go on to the Platte River in Nebraska before going on into Canada, others go into Wyoming and Montana. They generally spend nights on islands and sand bars in rivers, but also marshes and sometimes in fields. We have fed a family group that spend the day in an old burn scar in the forest along the Rio Grande. Open enough they could see around them, but fairly well hidden from human eyes.

Interesting birds. We get alot of them in the ag. fields around there. They seem to start with 2 siblings and end up with one?!

I really enjoy hearing the V formation flocks coming overhead around here a couple times a year! Many will roost for a time in the big farm fields nearby. They are another beautiful bird to watch!

I saw my first swan yesterday, ice is still on the river.
