Marshall at the 2024 PGA Championship
It is now official. I am all signed up and all paid up to be a Volunteer at next years PGA Championship here in town.. I got on line first thing this morning when they opened up registration and got in.

They make you pay to volunteer?
That sounds like some of the dude ranches I've heard about that have tourists that pay for the experience of being on a workin' cattle ranch.

Just under $300. (commit to working at least 4 -4hour shifts) They do give you some nice swag. Two golf shirts, a 1/4 zip sweater, light jacket and a cover (hat or visor) food and beverage tickets, two admission passes for the week and free parking.

CONGRATS!!!! I would do it in a heartbeat. It is a tough nut to get around here as they come once in a while to St. Louis but the volunteers is a hard job yo get.

I carried a scoreboard (I forget the exact term for the job) for five years at the Utah Championship, formerly the Nationwide Tour. It was quite revealing to see pros play the game. After seeing what they can do, I can no longer claim that I play golf. Mine is closer to flog.
We also had to pay for the privilege, but it was only something like $50 and we got a shirt and a hat, plus meals. I must have two dozen golf balls signed by the pros I worked for, some of whom are now on the PGA circuit like Andrew Putnam. (He was a true gentleman, very talented, and I told him at the end of our round that he'd be on the tour the next year. He was and still is.) There were also a few absolute jerks who treated the volunteers like dirt and whose names I have never heard again - which tickles me no end.

In the early sixties Palmer, Player and Nicklaus gave an exhibition at Shawnee CC in Topeka, Ks. where my father was the manager.
Watching the three of them practice before playing 18 holes was unbelievable. Palmer and Nicklaus hit drivers at the same time, when the two balls traveled approximately 100 yds. Nicklaus yelled, “now hook” and Palmer yelled, “now slice” and the balls crossed each other about one yard apart. The spectators broke into applause.
On the ninth hole I took my buddies camera and walked backwards four feet in front of them, filming all three as they walked together. Close enough to see little trickles of sweat on their cheeks.
Buddy was supposed to make me a duplicate of the film, but that never occurred. 😡

Sounds great austin20. About 10 years ago a friend I knew from grade school days and went to WI as I after high school as I graduation became a RN, retired, and moved to Vero Beach. She worked an event at Sawgrass and loved it. Have fun.

No, it came to me later. I was a "standard bearer". The walking scorer has a tablet-like device that reports back to the scoring trailer. The standard I carried is for the gallery. It has the players' names and score on a pole.

I could almost combine this post with the one about a Claim to Fame, but not being a golfing fan at all, I never really have given much thought to this. I grew up camping, fishing, swimming, winter ice fishing, hiking, and hanging out a great deal of the time at my uncles lot on Long Lake near Traverse City, Michigan my hometown. Anyway, right next to uncle's vacant lot was the summer home of Walter Hagen. Walter actually taught me how to tie several fishing knots when I was about 10 or so and paid me to catch small crayfish for bait. A very nice old guy that I didn't even know was a famous pro golfer until my grandpa told me several years after Hagen passed away.

I picked golf and somehow my Dad arranged for me to meet a guy at his home for a first lesson. It was Bob Goalby's house and I had never heard of him, only to discover later that he was the previous year's Masters Champion! He gave me a few tips and then presented me with a full set of clubs with his logo on them. He said he had been given them by a sponsor but hated them and was barred by contract from selling them. But he could "lose" them.
So I was taught by a Masters Champ. It didn't take and I never met him again. Sadly, Mr Goalby died last January.

I'm told he was more than a bit embarrassed to claim being the Champ ever after. He certainly didn't bring it up when I met him that one night, which was just a bit more than a year later.
