Not having seen the specific location, I'll make a couple of comments: Typically dairy barns have solid floors and the waste is scraped or 'flushed' into gutters that lead to open holding ponds. In warm climates(Texas), the dairy barns have a LOT of ventilation. Both of these factors lead me to guesstimate against the methane but certain conditions and circumstances could change this,
Methane build-up is usually the result of animal waste being held in under floor pits(hogs/chickens) and lack of ventilation(cold weather).
18-20K of dairy cows would be an extremely large building. Even the biggest I've seen would be possibly 10% of that number.

I read about that yesterday.
18,000 Dairy Cows. That is unbelievable.
Must have been a big explosion. I had read that most of the cattle, were packed in to a holding pen.
They think a short in the waste pump caused it. (Last I heard.)

Having to dispose all of the dead carcasses blows my mind! All mixed in with the debris from the building\buildings the cows were housed in.

Farming can be a dangerous vocation....... Prayers for the farmer's wife.
I have had to get rid of a cow or sheep from time to time, I can not imagine trying to take care off all those caucuses.
