50 yard Zero for your AR?
Looks like it works best for the most common shooting distances (with charts to prove it):
Zero Considerations
ARMA DYNAMICS recommends a 50 yard zero for your AR-15 rifle. The 50 yard zero provides for effective center-mass hits on target at the ranges where a carbine is most commonly used. A 50 yard zero allows the shooter to use a simple center-mass hold to ranges of point blank to 200-250 yards, depending on rifle and ammunition combination.

We sighted in our M16's in the Army at 50 yards. (*Been pointed out to me, that this yardage is incorrect. I'm fine with that. I was relying on memory from 43 years ago.*) Not intentional.
I could consistently hit 1/2 Torso targets at the 400 yard Random Pop Up Target Range. (My favorite.) Targets would Pop Up at random distances out to 400 yards. (No hold over.) You had 2 seconds to aquire the Target and shoot, or it would drop down and be scored as a "Miss."
Getting 21 out of 22, (if I am remembering the # correctly) was not too difficult. I was actually shocked how accurate the platform was. (1st time I had shot the 5.56.) I remember thinking, "I REALLY would not like someone who knows how to shoot, targeting me with one."

Seems to make sense. I was going to suggest that the height of your sights or scope above the bore may make a difference, and while it probably does, it most likely will not make a 300 zero very practical.

I think mine is sighted in at 50 yards. That sounds about the perfect distance to ward off those pesky soul savers, and unwanted guest!!!

My time in uniform, they were sighted in at 100 yards, but that was a long time ago. I still site them in at 100.

For my varmint rifles......I sight-in for 1.5" high at 100 yards.......which gives a point-blank (plus or minus 2 inches) range of approximately 280 yards.
For bigger game rifles......they get sighted-in for 1.75" high at 100 yards......and results in a point-blank (plus or minus 3 inches) range of about the same 280 yards.
Note that, after all these years, I've rarely had to hold "off-hair" to connect.

Basic training 1970, Ft. Leonard Wood, we sighted our '16s in at 25 meters. The farthest targets for us were 350 meters (somewhere around 383 yards); they were pop-up targets that were silhouetts of a person from about mid-thigh up. Pretty easy when nobody was shooting back.

I also went to Basic at Fort Lost in the Woods, @firstharmonic. Jan/Feb of 1980 for me. We probably shot at the same range.

Then you were the only unit in the armed forces that uses the M-16xx to do so. Zero was done at 25 Meters everywhere else.
