I had an uncle that fought at Ypres with the American Expedition Force in 1917.

After the Government told my great grandfather his claims in Alaska would be safe he joined as did his younger brother Nelson. The claims were jumped because they were valuable, my grandma was born up there but they had to leave because Grampa Phillips lungs couldn't take that kind of cold, my great uncle would be born in Seattle as they headed to San Diego for the mild climate. Once a mining engineer always a mining engineer... My grandma's cousin bought the King of Arizona over 50 years ago and my great grandfather was making my dad drive him to Yuma to see if the mine was still viable.... Brave men.
Newton Elliott Phillips' would later be MIA on May 15, 1945 on Okinawa Island. It is only written in pencil in my Grandma's Bible

My great uncle Earl L. Hover was killed in WW1 August 3rd 1918. His body was later returned to Belvidere Illinois where he was buried for his final resting place.
I have often wondered if he had not of died what my memories of him would have been. My grandmother, his sister gave me his BB gun that he owned as a kid when I was 8 years old, I still have it to this day.

My grandfather on dad's side was in ww I
But i was told he never left the states my dad told me his dad told him the story
He stayed in the states he had a dozen or so mules he was in charge of he had to count them each morning and night to make sure all were still accounted for
Not a glamorous or dangerous assignment for sure

I have one photo of grandpa in uniform sitting on a military truck .i helped my dad track down thru the family some distant cousin had it in a box of photos but dad remembered it from his younger years amazing it took a couple days but found the old lady who had it that was about a year before my dad passed he knew his time was short cancer and the docs told him maybe a year and they were right he made it a priority to find that old photo
Dad told me they lost. Everything in a fire when he was a young fellow all his dad's military stuff went with it

My grandfather was in the artillery. He was shipped overseas to France. It was November 1918 and Grandad Frank's outfit was getting close to the front, and they could hear the explosions of artillery shells. It was November 10.
The next morning the war ended.

My great great Uncle Yaz served in Europe during WW1 I never met him but my Father says the only War stories he talked about involved French ladies in Paris.

My grand dad on my moms side had a stab wound scar on his shoulder that he told us was from a German bayonet.We always assumed it was from WW1 until we were old enough to do the math.He was born in 1907. Years later grandma told us he was in the National Guard in the late 1920s and was never deployed.The stab would scar was from a bar fight in his mis spent youth. He also told us of one of our relatives that fought in the revolutionary war,I didnt know whether to believe that one or not but I found his grave about 6 months ago and it is mark Revolutionary war veteran.Nobody could spin tales like my grand dad.
