i think it has to deal with the diameter of the tube and some are rifled ? and are have to be registered as "other " by the BATF

As has been indicated here, I believe it needs to be 40mm in order to fire the actual M203 round.

Well, I will say that the M79 was a hoot to shoot! Kentucky windage was a fun way to waste ammo! 💥

I had one some time ago but sold it, Still got plenty of fire able 37 mm stuff along with some adapters to fire smaller stuff. For some reason I'm thinking about getting another one.
