these kids have a purpose, and the parents support them fully.
on Wednesday, my son, as coordinator of the Corvallis Throwing Camp, hosted an all day clinic focusing on discus, shot put, and javelin throwing events. boys and girls from 7th grade to high school could attend. over 100 athletes attended and more than 40 parents and school coaches also attended.
besides my son[coach at Corvallis High School] his assistants included 3 current college throws coaches, 4 current college throwers, and 3 former college throwers.
the day included 3 hrs of discus training, 2.5 hrs of shot put and 22.5 hrs javelin. an additional 45 minutes were devoted to specific training for the throws. weight lifting, nutrition, and general overall conditioning. a short time was devoted to informing athletes some basic requirements needed to get financial help when in college.
athletes traveled to tiny Corvallis from all points in Montana and some from Idaho also. farther travelers were from Glasgow, over 400 miles.
there were green hair, blue hair, red bright red hair, skinheads, shaggies, and afros. hoodies doo-rags and shorts with strategic holes in them. skin tight leggings, even an all black goth outfit complete with black lipstick.
the group was very respectful and appreciative of the opportunity to learn from the best instructors. the world needs more of these goal driven individuals in this world, and more adults to realize that there are some really good kids out there, and good parents too.

Good for your son . There are tons of good teens around . School teams are one . Volunteer firefighting is another. We have some great young people in our county departments

Having kids involved in sports or any organized activity is so important for their development and for their confidence.

I was involved in assistant track coach this spring and like you said there was a plethora of hair styles, cuts and whatnot. But to the every one of those 7-8th graders nary a one was unruly and all polite in this small rural school. It was a pleasure and congrats to your son.
