Found this article on the Askins "workaround" pistol.
Encyclopedia of Bullseye Pistol
This is the infamous story of the .22 caliber pistol that was converted to centerfire and helped Charles Askins win the National Matches at Camp Perry. The pistol was a Colt Woodsman with the gunsmithing done by no other than the legendary Frank Pachmayr. This story has been told so many times that the details are rarely straight.

Great story. I think I still have Askins's book, I bought and read it a long time ago. He was a "Man With The Bark On" a rough tough hard man. He was a border patrol man back when the border was secure. He worked with Bill Jorden I think. I seem to remember they averaged a gunfight every seventeen days for a period of time.
