Motorcycle ride from hell
Went out today with eight experienced riders, they said. I say, no friggen way. The one guy I was behind, kept putting on his brakes in every turn and wouldn't go over 40 mph. After a couple hours of this chitshow, And two near rear end accidents, me and another guy left the group and headed out on our own. I found out about an hour ago, the idiot in front of us causing all the problems, Dumped his bike at a traffic light. He also kept making wide turns, into oncoming traffic. He had (supposedly) been riding motorcycles for 40+ years. From now on, I only ride with people I know and trust. Some people just shouldn't ride, especially if they are afraid of their bike and other traffic. Sorry for the rant. Oakie

I have been on a few group rides with "cruiser" riders. I never stayed more than a few miles. Twenty or thirty bikes with a road captain all grouped together going too slow and pissing off cars trying to pass. A good way to die. But there was a group of us, usually five or six, riding together early Sunday mornings. We would meet for breakfast and be on the road early. Running hard and fast out in the country for a couple of hundred miles and done usually before 11 am. All experienced riders on sport bikes or sport tourers.

Sorry you had a bummer ride. Hope it’s your last. I pretty much ride solo.

I distinctly remember a particular ride in about 1976. We had a pretty High Speed group of 2 Stroke Yamaha RD's, Kawi H1/H2 triples, Honda CB400'S, one Suzuki 750cc 2 Stroke (liquid cooled) "Water Buffalo." A couple KZ 650's. All highly tricked out. (High School in Miami.)
A new rider joined our group. At a stop sign, he went to put his foot down and got his pants leg hung up. Took down the 3 bikes beside him at a stop light.
We no longer let "New Riders," join our group.

The usual group I ride with, Ride hard and fast. Not like 100mph fast, but usually a little over the limit. Most of us can ride peg to peg, but most of the time it is staggered riding. I also hate stopping at every convenience store to pee and get a drink. When we ride, WE RIDE. Usually from South Jersey, to Maryland or Virginia, before we stop. Guys know that they better have a full tank and used the bathroom before we leave. A couple of Saturdays ago, we left at 7am, and got home at 9:30 pm. 540 miles, with three stops.

Those 300+ mile rides got a lot easier when I finally got a windshield (quick detach) for my Fatboy

You young guys can do those type of trips. Our group now mostly disbanded because people have moved away would stop every 100 miles or two hours. We are Vietnam vets or Vietnam Era vets so from that you can tell our age and the reason for the extra stops.

I never liked riding with others. I feel you loose the freedom of the ride. You're constantly watching the others.. too cloose, too far away... too close... one riding up to talk to you.... I hated it

You guys would not like riding with my wife's brother. I call him David Allen Slow. It takes him 2 miles to get up to speed. Then, he lags so far behind that he doesn't see us turn off. Then we have to go hunt him down.
I love him like a brother, but he has to be the slowest human alive.

I see lots car clubs and motorcycle group rides on Hwy 160 out by me. They usually do a lap on Hwy 160 and Hwy 125 then go over Bull Shoals lake on the Peel Ferry. The roads are all curves and hills. I compare Hwy 160 to the Tail of the Dragon.
Most of the time, if I find myself ahead of them them, I'll pull over on the side and let them by. If I'm in hurry, I'll loose em in the curves. I understand wanting to see open road ahead of you on a group ride.

Summertime, early evening, north central Kansas. Riding thru thousands of acres of corn, wheat, rye. I learned about Miller Moths. My face shield was so smeared I was having to stop every few miles and clear moth goo so I could see. Front of me looked like something from a horror movie.

Exactly. Our group was so well organized and we all know what to expect from each other that the rides were never an issue. In fact we rode all over most of the US without any incidents.

The fact that we had been riding together for about 25 years may have had something to do with it .
