    It is a European, probably Belgium, Pinfire revolver. The holes on the back of the cylinder are where the pin protruded. The hammer struck the pin which ignited the cap inside the cartridge case. Popular in Europe in the 1800's. ELG is a Belgium proof mark.

    Some very high quality pinfire shotguns were made in France. Just noticed it is missing the ejector rod.

    It is not a rimfire. It appears to be either a French or Belgian pinfire. Quite a few models were made. If you do a Google or Bing image search for pinfire revolvers you may find a match. Bob

    Google Lefaucheux Revolver. He was the pinfire inventor 1840's I think what you have is a M1858 Navy 12mm.
