What is the 5.56 caliber best at/for, in your opinion? What does it do better than any other round?

The .223 is a very good varmint round. The 5.56mm is a military round. Both the same diameter, but the 5.56mm should not be used in a rifle marked .223. Rifles in .223 seem to have a shorter throat than those that are intended to shoot 5.56 mm. Shooting a 5.56mm military round in a rifle marked .223 can increase chamber pressure significantly if the rifle has a shorter throat.
Now as to what does the 5.56mm do better than any other round, I would say causes confusion. So I remember it as, you can shoot .223 ammo in a 5.56mm rifle but don’t shoot 5.56mm ammo in a .223 rifle.

Relatively inexpensive round to shoot/handload that is easy on barrels. Can be an adequately accurate, low recoiling varmint round. It is far from tops in performance but sufficient if it's performance parameters are kept in mind. Bob

Yep, I was gonna say it makes the libbies nervous. That said all mt AR types are chambered in 5.56 because it is a readily available military round, and can be scavenged if necessary.

It is not 'best' at anything other than being a great compromise round. It's a bit of a Jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none.

This was my thinking as well. It's a low recoil option that is pretty good for quite a few purposes, and if you want better, you probably need to sacrifice something.

Plus, it is pretty darn accurate in a dialed in AR.
I have a target, mounted to my safe. 20 rounds of 5.56 from a semi-worked AR, (after dialing in the scope.) Can cover it with a 50 cent piece/Silver Dollar @ 100 yards.

When serving Uncle Sam, I had plenty of choice of which rifle I could carry as long as it was an M-16. My opinion did not matter.
Never had a problem with the 5.56 because I know its limitations.

This ! I need no other reason. One rifle with a 1in 10 twist another with a 1in 9 and plenty of inexpensive bullets 55-65 gr.

Back when reloading supplies were cheap and plentiful I loaded hundreds or maybe thousands of 55 grain soft point bullets and shot most of them out of a Stevens bolt gun.It was a very accurate round/rifle combo and I shot everything from crows to whitetails with a 223 with very good success.Like everyone else stated,it may not be the best,but it was good enough for what I used it for.

The round is meant to wound your adversary in a serious manner, it takes (2) people from the battle to remove the (1) wounded soldier for treatment so in effect (3) people are removed from the battle. A killing round removes only (1) from battle......they being DRT.

What is it best at? Depends on the context.
I'll rephrase the question this way: from my limited set of rifles, what does the 223 do better than any of them?
In that context, at 100 yards and beyond its the most accurate round I shoot and it's the one that is best at scaring Libs.

It does a good job on yotes at distances out to 250 yards based on personal experience.....DRT.

I don't think the rifle has much to do with that statement. If you couldn't hit the ground if you fell out of an airplane, your choice of round and rifle doesn't matter.

What does 5.56 do better than others? In my opinion, it is better at being carried in large quantities, and fitting into easily-carried magazines in larger quantities.
Ideal blend of accuracy, range, decent power, and cartridge size/weight/MOBILITY.

It and 5.56, which is 90% of what I have, fit my only black rifle (where the hell is the walnut, anyway). Matwor said I needed one. Have not shot it yet.
