Nixon, didn’t really care about politics back then, but he started troop withdrawal and got me home a couple of months early. So he got my vote.

The first president I voted for was Carter (vs. Reagan). I was in first grade and we were holding elections in my class. My reasoning was: we seem to be doing ok with the current guy (little did I know).

Now, for the first presidential election where my vote counted (I think) I voted against Impeached President Clinton, during his first election.

Now for the first presidential election where my vote counted (I think) where I voted FOR a candidate was GWB, in his first term. Wow. What a mistake that was!

This question has brought back some of my 1976, inexperienced 20 year old thoughts and memories. I voted for Gerald Ford mainly because he was from my home state. Looking back, pretty silly reasoning on my part. This does tell me a little something about what might go on in the minds of today's young voters though.

Fast forward a few years to the Carter vs Reagan election. My thinking then just could not get a handle on a Hollywood actor becoming a US President! It just seemed like a cheapening of our most revered high office. Politics really had absolutely nothing to do with my early voting decisions. I guess you could say that I sure wish I knew back then what I know now, but then again........I could say that about a LOT of things!

In 1968 our school held a mock election. My parents were democrats and I thought I was, too. Nixon’s win soured me on voting for a bit. I was at MCRD San Diego in October of 1980 and we were more-or-less ordered to fill out absentee ballot requests. I knew for a fact that it was too late and I declined to participate in this waste of time and was promptly escorted out of the air conditioned class room to do bends & thrusts in the nearby sand box. Up until the time I became a property owner my philosophy was, “Why vote? It only encourages them.” Donald Trump would be the only president I have voted for.
