SBI investigating following deadly officer involved shooting along I-26

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — UPDATE:
Just after 1:00 a.m. North Carolina Highway Patrol Troopers sent a press release giving more information on an incident that shutdown I-26 for hours Monday night.
Troopers say at about 7:35 p.m. Monday evening Trooper Jeffrey Dunlap stopped to assist a stranded motorist along I-26 westbound near mile maker 33.
The press release says 57-year-old Wesley Taylor of Leicester produced a gun and fired at Dunlap striking the trooper in the chest.
The trooper's ballistic vest stopped the bullet and Dunlap returned fire, killing Taylor.
According to the release, Trooper Dunlap is a thirteen-year veteran assigned to Buncombe County. He was transported to a local hospital for observation and has since been released.
In accordance with agency protocol in any trooper-involved shooting, the involved member will be placed on administrative duty. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting an independent investigation of the incident. Any further inquiries into this incident should be directed to the SBI due to their separate ongoing investigation.

Having been born in England, and having gotten his Phd in English Literature in London, Professor Taylor was teaching at UNC Asheville with a specialty in Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales. Having won his US citizenship two years ago, Dr. Taylor was simply exercising his new-found Second Amendment rights when he decided to shoot a North Carolina State Trooper.
No way he was home-grown Leicester white trash.

Like most of you i amsure have read killing over the wrong order at a fast food place or parking spot seems even little things trigger the nut jobs anymore.
and the courts keep putting them back on the streets no healt care for the mental ill
causes a huge problem but states avoid it the cost of programs are bank breaking much easier to let them get killed by the police or Joe average if they doNot kill first
even better od on the streets with the free drugs previoded
And people wonder why we want to have and carry a gun

But, but, but aren't people better off living under bridges than in state hospitals? I have visited and worked in some state and reginol mental hospitals, and the answer, sadly, is not as clear as any of us would hope. Too bad citizens and government do not have the will an resources to help those folks. Often, families don't. Had friends with a schizophrenic son, and they stuggled heroicaly to keep him on his meds and somewhere safe. It was a hopeless struggle, that ended as sadly as possible.

He may have been a hillbilly or a redneck but that had nothing to do with shooting a cop. Or do hillbillies often shoot cops as a matter of course? And deals like this are why I don't stop to help anyone.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation continues to examine the circumstances around a fatal shooting involving a trooper as News 13 learns more about those involved in the July 3, 2023, incident.
News 13 checked court records to determine if Taylor, a resident of Leicester, had any prior encounters with law enforcement before Monday's shooting.
According to North Carolina records, Taylor only had traffic citations and violations. In October 2021, he was charged with an expired registration card/tag and an expired inspection. In February 2022, he pleaded guilty and responsible to those charges. Taylor was also charged with driving while impaired in 2012, which was dismissed by the district attorney in Buncombe County at the time, Ron Moore. In 2012, charges for an expired registration and driving under the influence were also dismissed by the DA.
In Kentucky, between 1984-1990, Taylor was found guilty of charges ranging from aggravated assault, fugitive warrants, forcible sex offenses, and burglary, for which he served time.

Trooper was a very lucky guy. That .44mag was right at the edge of a plate.

Everything about this is nuts......how on earth are people walking around at this level of insanity without all kinds of warning bells giving society a chance to deal with them before someone is a victim of their craziness? I am not a fan of red flag laws....but I do believe if they interview people around this guy there are probably lots of stories showing he needed a medical review of some sort. We need mental illness reform badly.
I hope that trooper comes through this without living through this moment daily.

I agree @pulsarnc, The Desert Eagle, was the only one I could think of.
My question/wondering about this, is why (?) only fire off one round? Firing off about 3-4/5 woulda been more effective. If you've crossed that mental threshold, why not give it 100%?

I would feel comfortable saying that that is a plate of Woven Kevlar. (Kinda surprised it did not deform it more.) It appears pretty thin.

The trooper appears to be a big man. I think a .44 Magnum at that range would break a rib and knock a small person off their feet. Even so, the trooper was very lucky the guy didn't just empty it.
There is a video of a cop who approached a pickup at night only to have the driver fire a Ruger .41 Magnum in his face. It missed but the fireball and blast stunned the cop and the guy drove off. The cop jumped back up and emptied his 9 mm at the fleeing vehicle and one bullet went through the back of the cab and hit the driver in the neck. It was the only hit out of 17 rounds fired. He ran into the ditch and was dead when medical help arrived.
A lot of cops have interesting tales to tell.

I went to see my chiropractor in N. Asheville yesterday. One of his patients is a State Trooper. This Trooper was the first backup officer at the scene of this shooting.
Trooper told my doc that Trooper Dunlap saw the vehicle parked on the shoulder of I-26 just south of Asheville. The vehicle had a flat tire. Trooper Dunlap was going to help the guy change the tire, the guy said he was getting the jack but he came up with the big pistol and started shooting.
