Child killed, at least 20 others injured after school bus crash in Ohio

One child is dead and at least 24 others are injured after a crash involving a school bus in Clark County, Ohio,

A non-English speaking person went over the centerline and hit the bus head-on causing it to leave the road, roll over and eject one child, who died at the scene. At least 24 children were taken to hospitals. The bus was only minutes away from arriving at the school.

Sad indeed, our prayers are with the families.

Another good argument for seat belts on school busses. Hard to believe that by law, passenger cars have to have seat belts but a buss with 30 little kids/projectiles inside doesn't really warrant any safety concerns ................. seriously?

"A non-English speaking person." That seems kinda odd. Is that significant to the crash or just a euphemism for something else?

Pretty sure the buses here (Wisconsin) have seat belts and the attendant on the bus is the "enforcer".

The @NTSB recommends that ALL states require seat belts on school buses.

Right now - there are just 8 states that have this requirement. Ohio is not one of them. @wsyx6 @fox28columbus

I hope that after this, there will be seatbelts mandated on all school buses. But I'm pretty sure the powers that be will spend years studying all the angles for and against the simple act of installing seat belts in school buses.

You wanna try to keep 30+ rowdy children in a seat belt?

" National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which sets national standards for school bus safety, requires three-point seat belts (lap-and-shoulder belts) on school buses weighing less than 10,000 pounds, but allows individual states to decide whether to require seat belts on larger school buses. Six states – California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, and Texas – do so."

At least the driver had a license; a Mexican driver's license. So he was legal to drive. And, probably to vote..in California.

a little more info from the local news today

Joseph was identified by his Ohio Identification Card and at the crash also produced a license from Mexico that was determined to not be valid because of his immigration status, according to the criminal complaint filed in Municipal Court records News Center 7 obtained.

If convicted as charged, Joseph could receive a sentence of 6 to 12 months in jail and/or a $5,000 fine, according to the criminal complaint.
