I think I remember the reason for not sealing the underside of a deck was to not trap moisture from the weather in the lumber.

Never heard of anyone wanting to stain the underside. I can't really think of any reason to, but if you want a good product I always recommend CWF Flood.

I also uncovered this in a quick search and agree with all of it:

Should I Stain the Underside of My Deck or Leave as It Is?
Staining is vital for wooden outdoor objects such as desks, picnic tables, wood fences, and of course, your decking area. In my opinion, anything that will be seen by anyone should be stained just so it looks better. To stain your deck is pretty simple, as it is similar to painting. You jus

I have done what you are about to. Cover everything you don't want stained. You won't believe how many drips there will be.

I have built, and stained a lot of decks. Over a dozen.

Why do you want to stain the underside?

If it's visible, stain it. If possible do it during a period of very low humidity so that the wood is as dry as possible.

What type of wood is it?

Aesthetics, it is “the ceiling” of her patio and it is not looking good.

That was the reason the professional painter gave me. But the underside had been stained before and the wood still looks structurally sound

    Pressure treated pine

If it's Southern Yellow Pine then it's highly resistant to rot and insects. Stain 'er up!

We did ours at one of the rentals. We used the behr paint/stain from home depot. Five years later, it looks great. It was recommended to us by our painter. Glad we went this route. Others we have used, didn't last two years. 😡.
