Competition? ? So is the trigger set to light? I have had that happen when to light. Just a guess from the info.

Check the face of the chamber for any burs from dry firing.

The bur can hold back the round from fully seating.

Being a rim fire, when the bolt slams shut the round goes off, either from the blot face or the bur hitting the rim.

As others have mentioned.......what rifle is it?.......pictures needed, especially of the empty chamber/rear of barrel, and boltface.

If a round fires BEFORE turning the bolt handle down.......I'd think the problem lies at the bolt nose/barrel breach interface. This is because the firing pin cannot reach the case primed rim until the bolt handle is turned down......due to interference of the bolt's firing pin cocking ramp.

If a round fires AFTER turning the bolt handle down........look into the trigger/safety assemblies.

    First thing.......pics!🤔

    Hope this helps.

When the round goes off while turning the bolt is there a firing pin dent on the case? If so I would say you have a problem with the sear and trigger notch. If no dent possibly a bur, or to tight of head space maybe. Take the rifle UNLOADED cock it and bang the butt of the rifle with the palm of your hand and see if the firing pin will disengage from the sear. If it does trigger adjusted to light or possible sear trigger engagement problem. If the rifle was used, possible someone tried to change the angle of the sear notch, you don’t want to do that.

Is the bolt dirty with crud holding the firing pin forward?

There are people who would pay extra for that feature.

    What rifle is it?

Gotta be a Remington, or had a Remington trigger installed.

No it's a Marlin 981T. It's on its third aftermarket trigger (I shoot this gun alot). I've just worn it out along with the sear interface.
