rugby vs american football
A great friend of mine is from England. Former Royal Marine with total disdain for woke agendas and political pandering. A proper good guy. But he doesn't fancy the NFL. He finds it too soft.
Earlier today, he sent me this:
If you ever get a chance to watch some rugby games, do it. The rules are pretty simple and easy to pick up. And the game is absolutely amazing. I love rugby even though it would probably kill me if I played.

Son played Rugby in Buffalo. I took my sweetheart Diane up to watch a few of his games. She spent most of the time in my truck with her hands covering up her eyes. Not a game for the faint hearted. He drank too much beer and chased too many girls. His grades slipped and they kicked him out of School of Engineering. When team walked in bar patrons scattered. One night called from hospital at 2am. Got hit in head with beer bottle and his car was missing.
He made three trips to West Virginia and begged Dean to let him in. He only wanted to be a ME. Finally he made it in but once I had to threaten to cut him off. He graduated in top 1% of his class. Thank God that horrible period in my life is over. I enjoyed the games but not my Diane. ----------------------------------Ray

When i was living and working in France, I often attended rugby games. It is WAY better than American football. No pansie protective gear, no stupid rules, very few time outs and penalties. I have often thought it would be interesting to watch a team of top NFL players play against a good rugby team. The NFL would loose badly.

On the old show " Wide World of Sports" the would have Australian rules football. Those guys would clobber each other then get up and shake hands.

I watched a bunch of guys,most from Europe,playing Rugby in a local field.I have no idea what the rules are but there were several big guys knocked out cold and they left them on the field and kept playing.When the knocked out guys came to,they staggered to their feet and got right back in the game.

On the old show " Wide World of Sports" the would have Australian rules football. Those guys would clobber each other then get up and shake hands.
I remember a long time ago the San Diego Chargers had a punter from Australia. He laid a smack down on a guy returning a punt and in the postgame laughed that he used to make tackles like that without all the pads.

In the history of the First Marine Division, " The Old Breed", there is a description of a football game played by the Marines and an Australian Army unit. The powers that be, decided a sporting event would be good for the troops morale. since every night they would fight each other in the streets of Melbourne.
It was a bit of a hybrid event with rules from American football and rugby. The stadium was full of Marines and Aussie soldiers. Breer was served only in paper cups.
When the whistle blew and the ball was snapped, fights broke out among the players on the field and the troops in the stands.
It was said to be a memorable event...............

I worked with a guy that played rugby on a team about every weekend. It's really a stretch to call that a sport. To me it looks like a group of sadists that perform under the guise of calling it a game.

My high school buddy john got a football scholarship to Vanderbilt. He started there 2 years at center.
Unlike most football players, John got a good college degree in Civil Engineering and wound up with a good job for the railroad.
John was just 5-11 and too short for pro football. He moved to Atlanta and started playing rugby. He loved it and played for seven years. Got his shoulder all messed up and got total shoulder replacement.
Eight years of hard core high school and college [SEC] football, no problem.
Seven years of rugby, time for the Operating Room.
