My daughter lives a little over an hour from there. Full disclosure: it's been topping out at 106* nearly every day, and makes up for it with high humidity from the Gulf air. She has to keep a few cattle to keep her agricultural zoning (leased and now owns) and afford the property taxes. 8 cows and a miniature horse brought her 1st year tax bill down from $30,000 to about $3,500 on 54 acres and a modest kraftboard house. California refugees have moved in and raised real estate prices big time (but she is a bit closer to Austin). Other than the heat, she loves it, though.

Update: My daughter says the real estate around Stockdale should be more reasonably-priced than where she lives, but south of San Antonio is more reasonable than Stockdale... plus its a shorter drive to the beaches around Corpus Christi for when you want to get away. i.e. South of San Antone somewhat offsets the heat and humidity with convenience to the beach. She says Stockdale is good cattle country, and has a big stock auction. BTW, they had a cold snap of only 101* at her place, today.

There are free states? Texas sure is not one!

Lived in El Paso once, (about 5 years) when we came back from 6 years in Europe. Back in the mid-late 60's, (when it was still safe to go into Juarez.) We spent many an afternoon after Church there. Good food and exploring the town. Good memories. (Ft. Bliss/White Sands Missile Range.)
You could not pay me enough $ to go in to Juarez now. (Watch "Sicario." I or II) a War Zone for sure. American over there? Good Luck. (Kidnap/Ransom bait.)

Spent some time in San Antonio when our son finished basic at Lackland. We enjoyed the visit very much.
Enjoyed our visits to Dallas
Never liked it when I had to travel to Houston for work...

My sister that lives in Katy, loves it there. My other sister that Lives in Humble, Hates it. It got overrun with Boarder crossers, and the are not nice. She said there is a shootout at least once a month at the local walmart. She lives in a gated community and still everyone gets robbed there. She is thinking about moving more west towards San Antonio, but not that far. San Antonio isn't the nicest place to live either. I like where mom and dad live up in Fort Worth, but even there isn't all that nice anymore. I hope you find a nice place to settle down in. Texas is a big state with lots of great folks. You just have to find that one place. I'm surprised that Nunn hasn't responded. I think he is Northeast of Dallas. My friend Mark moved there and loves it. Country living at its finniest.๐

I think being near family and people that you care about is key to making any place wonderful.
I don't have much family left.....we are the "old guys" in the family now and the younger members of our family don't really have much to do with each other like our generation does.
My parents and their brothers/sisters were pretty much bonded to each other....no holiday plans were made without it including the same crowd of family. My generation does not do that, we do have a select bunch of family that gets together for dinners and such....but nothing like my parents. The younger bunch barely knows the names of their cousins and such. Its so sad to imagine what it will be like if this continues to degrade as the generations go.

That's the truth. My wife's family lives about 20 minutes from us. I go shooting with her dad every week, every once in a while we all get together for dinner, etc. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I turned down more than one promotion in my career because it involved relocating. Being close to family and giving your children roots is more important than money. IMHO

Our family is super tight. I talk to my sisters and parents, almost every day. Living 2,000 miles apart is hard. My wife's family is all around us, but they don't talk to each other. I never understood how 9 brothers and sisters, could live so close to each other and never speak. Family is everything. We stayed here so long, so Chris could be close to his family and friends, otherwise I would have moved to Texas, to be close to my family. Moving south is the reason for getting closer to my family. I don't think Donna realizes how much it hurts and bothers me, to live so far away from them.

Oakie,
You may think "family is everything" but when you have a crappy family...........you don't feel that way!
Other than my parents and sister, the rest of my family, I don't talk to. They aren't terrible (the ones that were have died off), we just have nothing in common.
I have friends I value FAR more than my extended family.
