The simple break open single shot rifle

For some reason the single shot break open rifle is really appealing to me I have two now and is something I watch for on the used gun racks latest one a CVA Scout in 44 mag been having a blast shooting that one

    I love them as well. Same with shotguns. My old H&R’s and NEF Handi-rifles and Pardner shotguns are still some of my favorites. Combination of their simplicity/utility, coupled with a dose of nostalgia make them truly a pleasure to use in the field.

    I have a 223 H&R that belonged to my brother ( RIP Scotty ) he swore it was a great shooter

    I have never even shot it I just keep it clean and in the safe

    years ago I had a Thompson center contender pistol with about four or five barrels of different calibers singe shots was interesting and got it at a pawn shop but just never got the bug and interested

    My TCR-87 with seven barrels is a classic they don't make anymore. And I have my Dad's H&R Topper that he shot quite a few Pa. white tails with in the late 40's and 50's.

    Recently traded off a H&R "Ultra-Rifle," in .30.06 w/a built in muzzle brake and a Boyd's Grey, Green, Brown Laminated stock. Simmons Whitetail Classic Scope. (New/unfired.) Aquired a (early model) Ruger SR-22 (AR style semi-auto)

    They're ok. Some don't like to eject shells very well, IME and that makes follow up shots slow/difficult.

    They are OK however, most I have seen, in particular H&Rs are 3 MOA rifles & like Mr P said, difficult to eject.

    IMHO, I wouldn't shoot any game over 50yds with one.

    I had a H&R Whitetail Limited in 30-06, took one nice 10 pt about 10 years ago and for some reason sold it off , it always shot plenty good enough for deer hunting here in WI.


    How I only have T/C Contenders and Encores for single shots , have 223, 30-30, 7-30 Waters , 405 Winchester and 45 cal black powder for the Contender frame . In the Encore 204 Ruger , 243 Win., 280, 7mm Mag, 500 S&W and 50 cal black powder

    The only one I own, is an old Stevens SXS 12 gauge, that kicks like a mule. My fancy was always lever action rifles.

    Nice! Consider over 100 years ago these and other s were used in schutzen (Shooting) matches at mainly 200 YDs. Standing, no rest & mostly without scopes,

    Harry Pope fitted barrel come to mind. Sub MOA accuracy was superior to anything in its time.
