not much help other than a internet search and find some one with great feed back and examples on the company or person doing it

best of luck thats a nice keep sake and story

I hope you dont have to chop some one up with it LOL

one of my old bosses ( we worked together 25 + years ) was decent at martial arts started as a kid then got into the sword part of it later on he was so mild mannered no one would ever guess his skills

I don't really know the difference int e Japanese swords but he had some newer versions he used for practice and had original one the mid size one ? a in-law , his wifes uncle had gave him and he was looking for a original larger sword

I don't know the proper names and sizes . sorry

he was married a Japanese lady he met thru friends at work ( Honda )

she would not allow him to bring the sword into the house until a cleansing ritual was performed by a Japanese holy man to cleanse it of any soul(s) it may have taken in its history did not want the possible sprits coming into her house and was very strong willed about such things they did have it blessed ?

I have not seen him for 15 yrs I hope he found the one he wanted I know he had the money he just hated the going price of the very old well crafted sword like he wanted and was holding on waiting for the right deal to come along

My shaped Bamboo Katana would not "chop someone up," Ditch. (Not a metal blade.)

It would however, function much better than a Baseball bat, especially in Thrust mode. Could definately BTS out of someone, with one.

I really like it. Anyone that knows how to use one, will agree, it is a very formidable weapon.

My next door neighbor, (a female) has taught for 5 and competed for 3. We work out together with weapons. Staff, Nun-Chukku, Katana. (My good Buddies, Daughter.) Yeah, She could take me, in a heartbeat, if she wanted to.

Her female Pit is named, Rousey. (As in Rhonda Rousey.) Of MMA fame.

Nice to keep sharp. Never can tell........................................

The first two have actual Japanese collectable swords - the last two just sell imported stuff - but if you use the auctions listed - you can "Ask The Seller A Question" and they might be able to refer you to someone who would know if they don't.

We have A very diverse group here, so I will ask.

I have an early Japanese Bamboo Katana (at least 100 years old) brought back from WWII by my Dad. (One of the 1st, of the Occupying Forces.) I use/practice with it on a regular basis. (It stays by the front door.) A very formidable weapon. (Think baseball bat, only better.)

I would like to get the handle re-covered in Shark/Ray Skin. Anyone here, know anyone that can do this?

    Thank you in advance.

If it were mine, 100 years old and a family heirloom, I don't think I would take a chance of messing it up...but that is just me..

I think I would rather be slapped with the bamboo kantana than butt heads with your dog.

I would agree with that, Sir. I would say, it gives me great confidence to kmow that Buddy would be on someone, before I could engage & Start "smacking" somone w/the Katana, or deciding which Firearm to utilize.

@William81, going to the right person, it would not "mess it up."

You, Sir - Would not know Class, if it snuck up on you and bit you in the behind. 😉😂🤣😆

(And) If I wanted to go cheap, it would be "Skateboard Tape."

I recall when there is a bamboo "blade" the guard or the metal bits has significance. Like a famous maker. After the owner turned over the blade back after WW2.

I'd send pics to the Sword Club in San Francisco before doing anything.

It had a Mum as the blade guard. (Possibly made of bone?) It deteriorated and finally broke off in pieces. I hate that that is gone. In retrospect, I should have saved the pieces.

*When I had it out and started this thread, I rubbed it down with Mineral Oil. Went from a light tan, to a dark mahogany brown. It is a beautiful hand crafted piece of art. (That) Can also be used as a weapon, in a less than lethal capacity.

*I appreciate the input and links.
