a visual way of representing the signal strength, or “loudness”, of a signal over time at various frequencies present in a particular waveform. Not only can one see whether there is more or less energy at, for example, 2 Hz vs 10 Hz, but one can also see how energy levels vary over time.

I love that sound!

Now picture this, your are 40 y/o woman from the Dominican Republic living in NH a half mile up a mountain when you see the big animal in your veggie garden and it screams at you and charges.
My sons wife had that happen last year , she had no idea what it was , she got in the house and stayed in until my son got home from work
Now she wants a gun
We still laugh about it

NH? New Hampshire? They have elk there?

I used to hunt elk on a place near Mesa CO. The guy had a small captive herd in pens right next to the ranch HQ and the bugling bulls were within 100 yards of the sleeping cabins. Makes sleeping difficult but sure ramps up the enthusiasm.

There was a hunting preserve that fell on hard times and the fences broke down, I understand many animals escaped

I knew they used to be more widespread, just never figured New Hampshire would have 'em. In my mind I guess I just automatically associate them more with the western states.

Interesting post forgemonkey. Back in the late '60's, among other things, I ran a Spectrial Dynamics spectrum analyzer while working for for Allison Gas Turbine. Were were studying sound emissions of our engines. Gov had just started rules for airport noise requirements. Initially the on-screen display showed just a mass of frequencies and noise levels. But I could average the input over time and it all made sense. We could identify the peak frequencies and noise level and see harmonics. One of the most interesting things I did there before retiring in 1982.
