Getting more bear sightings around here. Not prolific enough to be a nuisance yet. Still a novelty at the moment.

Did you leave a picanic basket with a tub of creosote from the smoker or a bacon maple log? That sounds good. I may have to stop by Dunkin for a few since I got some bacon in the fridge. Hey don't shoot if you see a 6'3" Jappo in your picanic basket (times be tough and bacon maple logs are good).

Frank, we have nine bears that come out almost daily. About three cubs and most females. We have only harvested one male bear in 30 years up there. He was about 350. The bears have gotten a lot bigger over the past few years. They destroy all my blueberry bushes, but I love to see them. It is especially cool to see them when we have guest up. Most have never seen a bear and they get all excited, especially the kids. When we have company, that is the only time we feed them. The kids will toss them marshmallows and oreos off the upper deck. I really don't like doing that because they then become a nuisance and stop fearing us. I let them do it so they can take pictures of the bears. A couple of summers ago, I have a picture of me on one of the trail cameras, then a picture of a bear about two minutes later. Never saw him!!! Scared the poop out of me. Oak

They spot one once in a while in the conservation area near me. I figure one of these days I will see one when I am in the back areas fishing....

I went bear hunting once in Wyoming, I really wanted to bag one, in the 8 days we hunted I never even seen one. I’ve heard the meat is really good tasting, and I can’t remember if they said the meat tasted better on bear taken in the spring or fall. I think it would be a cool to watch them in the wild, and I can imagine they could be a little more destructive than raccoons. Lol

A friend gave us meat from a 165 lb. bear taken in the fall. I don't know if that was live weight or not. Sauteed it with onions & peppers and it was great.

Other friends have tried meat from large animals & those taken in the spring. They wouldn't even feed it to their dogs.

I hate bear meat. Very stringy and chewy. I tried it twice and both times it was bad. Even had a professional chef prepare it for us. I would rather eat an old work boot!!

Maybe the best meat I ever had, back in early 80s. The bears here are all huge at least the ones Ive seen.

Probably the best meat, bar none, that I've ever had was from a black bear taken on Prince of Wales Island in SE Alaska back about 1980. One of the guys in the logging camp I was working in had gotten a bear way up in the mountains that had been eating pretty much nothing but berries. He had one of the hind quarters cured and smoked like you would a ham. Oh my gosh! Best meat ever!

Good luck to your dad, Oakie! Hope he has something with a little more oomph than that .256 Winchester!

    Yes Sir.

What is he hunting with, Oakie?

By Far, the most Bear encounters I have ever had, (and I have lived all over.) Were in West Milford, NJ. (I could literally throw a rock from my back yard into NY State.) Right on the Line. Bearfort Ridge, AT Right behind my House. Greenwood Lake, NY/NJ right out front. I had inuemerable up close and personal Bear encounters there. Parking my Truck and coming in after dark to my back driveway, walking through the woods to my 1947 Chestnut Log Cabin, was always an adventure.

Also, the ONLY Bear Fatality ever recorded in NJ, came on the Ridgetop of Bearfort Ridge, right behind my house about 4-5 years after I had moved. Ton's of Bear activity in our neighborhood.

I had slept on that Ridgetop, inumerable times, by myself in a Bivvy Bag. (Not even in a tent.) Usually after 4th of July. It was an incredible place to watch the fireworks, all the way to NYC. There would be 20 +/- people up there on that night. Incredible. I was usually/always, the only one staying the night, even though, I had the absolute closest house, to where we were.

Made me consider how lucky I had been, after reading about the fatality. (She was in a group, in the daylight hours.)
