Pretty wild looking creatures for sure. The article mentions that they are being reintroduced, but doesn't mention anything about reducing all of the problems that are reducing their population. If those aren't being addressed, would the reintroduction be all for nothing?

Seeing one in person is really something. I remember back in high school, I went to a summer cross-country program at Brevard College near the Pisgah National Forest in NC. There was a small stream that flowed through the campus. One evening it stormed really bad, and afterwards I found a dead Hellbender washed up on the bank. Had never heard of them and had no idea what I was seeing. A giant salamander with a mouth full of teeth…..kind of creeped me out.

So these are different from mud puppies?? Looking at the pics I don't see any noticeable differences.

I remember seeing a mud puppy a couple of times when I was 8 to 10 years old.

OMG!! That there is ancient history!!

    They prefer non-polluted water.

We have a lot of mud puppies in various lakes in the area but I've never seen or heard of one getting that big.
