Butterball turkeys, $1.08 per lb., 11 to 13 lbs. 18 to 22 lb turkeys, off brand .57 cents a lb.
How is this possible with the price of grain for turkey feed?? A 20 lb. turkey at $11.40?? I just have no idea where the profit is for anyone from farmer to consumer. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled for the low price!! I just don't know how they can do it.
Comments?? Any turkey farmers here??

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that this years frozen turkeys were last years live birds, sorta like taxes they run a year behind........not that feed was that much less last year

The turkeys Ive looked at are too big for me. Hardly fit in the oven.

A bunch of turkey farms were culled due to a avian flu spread some time ago

It's called a "Loss Leader." They use that and lose $$, in order to get you in the store to buy more/other stuff.
Having worked in the Meat Dept of a major grocery chain for the last two years, I was laying in bed last night thinking "Thank God, I am not there any longer." (Realizing that Thanksgiving was right around the corner.) Plus I worked both Thanksgiving days. (Got out by 2-3 pm.) Early Store Closure.
We would go through maybe 6-7 pallets of Turkey's, (Apprx 2000 lbs each) in a couple days. Was always difficult to keep up with the demand. I do not miss it.

Butterball headquarters is in Garner nc about 50 miles up the road from me . Huge processing plant about 12 miles away from my house . Turkeys are huge business in eastern nc . Their cold storage warehouse cover several acres .

Ken, I thought about the "lost leader" but there is only so much they can afford to lose on one turkey. Again, at these prices I'm suprised anyone makes any money at any level.

Last night I did a little shopping at grocery outlet I turned around and saw a sign: Jenny O Turkeys 7.99 with 50.00 purchase. I had over 50 and wasn't planning on buying a turkey. Christmas dinner. It's a nice size for the 3 of us .

Our local Food Lion had turkeys for .39 a lb with a $35 purchase. I don't think that would cover the processing & shipping. Since I was spending twice that, I picked up the smallest one. At $5.45, 14 lbs might still be too big for the "set it & forget it" rotisserie.

$10.00 apiece here for an 18-22 pounder. We always buy two and quarter them, a nice five pound roast with little left overs. Hams are 99 cents, we do the same with them.

We saw Kroger brand at $.79/lb yesterday but none were small enough for the two of us. Next to them were Butterballs at $2.79, and I saw an ad for Costco premium brined birds for $4.79. Not about to pay $50 for a ten-pounder, thank you.
For various reasons, we're probably just going to meet our elder daughter family at some restaurant for T'Day this year. Or possibly order one of those "everything included" dinners you pick at the store and simply heat up. Neither woman is inclined to do all the work involved - and I do not blame them.

My wife and our daughter truly love cooking a big Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter or whatever large celebration we have planned!! Sunday will be our Thanksgiving as our son-in-law will be working on Thanksgiving Day!!
My wife does the turkey, I do the dressing and our daughter does the sides. It is a real family celebration!!!!!
