Seed in the winter? A winter grass?

Never heard of this before. Does it work in the snow? What do you mow with, mower or snow blower?

Hot Momma finished spreading our rye grass seed yesterday.

Hey Joe, what is this snow you are talking about??? Remember LF is in 'bama and I'm in SC.

The rye grass is winter hardy. The hot summers kill rye grass graveyard dead!

We only have pretty grass in the winter because of our ungodly hot summers!!

I grew up in Missouri and don't recall the folks doing this there either.

I do remember clearly one Thanksgiving we were in T-shirts and mowed the lawn before company arrived for dinner. I was certain this was a sign of the end of the world. Turns out it was just global warming. This was back in mid 1960's, and was quite unusual.

    Winter rye?

We planted 240 acres in the past month. About 20 hours of seat time.

A couple years ago I came really close to buying one of those spreader things that you can pull behind the mower. We decided to go with just doing the back yard and it was "enough" so we've been skipping doing the entire place. If I were trying to make the house look nice for the neighborhood it would be different.....we just want some "life" around here on the dreary days.

It has drawn the neighbors cows over here a few times. He thinks its hilarious....he plants over 100 acres of rye and I have this little 1 acre patch, but mine is "better."

I plant rye in the winter months. It stays nice and green but never gets tall enough to mow. I also plant turnips and collards so there will be something green in the garden during most of the winter.

Usually one of the neighbors or this year, two of them plant winter wheat. It is nice to have the green around us in the middle of winter.

I like the turnips and collards idea.

The food plot turnips have already been frosted and turned brown here. Rye often turns a purplish hue after a cold weather hit. It'll be interesting to see how this 50-65* weather affects the rye over the next few days. Many places there isn't enough moisture to germinate what was planted 3 weeks back.

We finally got a tid bit of rain here....its been so dry they've got a state wide burn ban in place and have for some time now.

I'll be glad once we can burn the boxes out on our burn pile.

So, that's what happened to the box!

Up here we spread salt. But that's to melt snow and doesn't change the color much.

'But that's to melt snow and doesn't change the color much.'

It will if they mix beet juice with it.

Down here, we write our name in the snow. It changes the color usually. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜†

Some 'rust belt' states have been trying some sort of beet juice extract instead of (or in combination with) salt on slick roads.

My place is surrounded by an abundance of Red Pines, Juniper bushes, and a few Austrian and White Pines.

There is plenty of GREEN here during the long WHITE winter months of northern lower Michigan!

We have a couple long leaf pines and a bunch of cedar on our place, but we are mostly thick with hardwoods here. Everything drops leaves and you feel so exposed. I can actually see some of my neighbors in the winter.
