One of the sweetest dog we every had was an older black lab we rescued. They estimated Max was about 5-7 years old when we adopted him. He had been mistreated you could tell but he was a sweetie

We were blessed to have Max with us for just about six years

I know the feeling. I still miss my Isabella. Our other dog is still depressed and missing her best friend. She has not been the same since she died. I was dreaming of her the other night and still call for her when I come home, then remember she is goneπŸ˜ͺ. This is so unfair. I know she is better off , but that doesn't make me miss her any less. My son has her ashes and I have her dog prints and memory etched in my heart forever. Oak

You've got an upstairs bedroom, should you ever need it.

*@hillbille, you get the woodshed. (It's the garage door in need of repair.)

We have a chihuahua and I have Jack Russell shorty. The reason I have the Jack Russell is my wife does not like my hyper-dog.He can't be still for more than a few minutes and will chase anything from chipmunks to black bears. He loves my wife and I think she may be coming around to Mr. Trump,my Jack Russell.

I figure you've gotta get past some more of the hurt before getting another dog, Oakie. You'll know when you're ready, though.

And I say get another Lab. Such great companions.

Agree with Kevin, there are some that can get a new pup as soon as the older one passes, but others, like my wife and I need some time. We just got a new pup 2 1/2 months ago and it has been over 4 years since our last lab passed away.

Thanks guys. Yeah, maybe I should give it a little more time, for my heart to heal. I just really miss my girl and hate seeing the other one so sad.

...I had a Border Collie rescue that was the best I have ever had...when she died I told my self I would never get another pup and go thru that again...well, I inherited a male and female Doberman that were 1 and 2 years old, I'd been around both since they were 8 wks old...the female is more needy for affection than the male, but both are gentle as can be when not in their "protective mode"...both have gone thru obedience training and are great with commands...except when there is a squirrel involved and then they both go deaf...they have both taught me Dobies are great around kids, EXTREMELY smart, caring and very protective of their "family"...learned that man needs his best friend(s) beside him...

That describes my Buddy to a T, @Texas1911DE.

@Oakie , I was thinking about this last night, with Buddy all pressed up against me on the bed. Personally, I would need to get another Pup/Young Rescue, to replace him. It would leave too big a hole in my Heart, not to.

Pit is the #1 choice. (Per my experience with Buddy.) I would also consider/like a Rotty or a Doberman. I am not afraid of the breeds. It is ALL about how you raise them. Give them Kindness, Love and Gentleness, they will reciprocate.

I really enjoy a strong, muscular, loyal breed that will respond to a threat, when it presents itself. Buddy has been Stellar. My "Once in a Lifetime," dog.

I Thank God for bringing us together, almost every single night.

    Get a Pup, Oak.

Black Labs. Oh yes those were the days. Have a photo of my lab with 30+ mallards he retrieved at a duck club way back. Even field trailed them for a few years. Best dogs ever.

Get your puppy, everyone needs joy. I really don't know what I would do with what I'm going through if I didn't have the puppy antics of Davy and Turnip...

Brother @Oakie, if you are missing a dog and wanting a dog, you are ready for another. (Coming home and calling for them. Etc.)

Go to a Shelter, and remove a dog from a bad situation and bring them home to shower Love and Affection on.

It will do wonders for you both.

    Your Brother,

    - Ken -

Been looking at the shelters. We have had a couple rescue dogs. I want a purebred, and they do pop up at the animal rescue placeses. A lot of them come here from hurricanes and storms down south. Our one Schnauzer came from Katrina. She was a good dog and we have her buried next to our four labs, out back. Each have their own headstone, that we get made. 30 bucks online and they have a picture, name and dates on them.

He is a Cairn, but sometimes he identifies as a Doberman…..😁

I believe you are correct on the Cairn Terrier @Wild Turkey. My Sister had a Teacup poodle that (for many years) towards the end, was my Dad's baby. God help you if you tried to touch my Dad With "Choco," on his lap. LOL.

Lived to be apprx 14-15. (For some reason, small dogs live longer.)

Get a Pup @Oakie. (If it doesnt work out, I'll take it.)

*There, you have an "Out." 😁

You can sign up with various "Rescue," assoc. for Breed specific, Rescues.

They are twins. Our β€œBear” is very macho when he is inside barking and growling while looking out the window.

Oakie, go for it. You will know when the time is right. At least that is supposed to be how it works. Did not work for me and my sweetheart Diane. In my 80 years I have had a Pointer, Beagle and three Toy fox Terriers. When Max our first Toy Fox Terrier passed we waited about a year and started to search and look again. We found a Jack Russel at a local shelter one day. Sat down to sign papers and Diane started to cry. I had to take her home. We must have repeated this process nearly ten times and each time i brought Diane home crying. She just could not commit. The last time after almost seven years we went to the Long Island Rescued Dog show in Middletown, NY and spotted a cute little Beagle. We sat down to do paper work at same time as little boy and his mom did same. They thought they had first dibs. My wife and i overheard conversation between little boy and his Mom. Diane started to cry and told me " i can't take that little boy's dog away, please take me home." On the way home she told me" I don't ever want to look for another dog again."

Fast forward a few months I figured it was hopeless and i am sitting at the computer one night late and the hair raised up on my arm when I saw this little fella on the internet way the hell the other side of Scranton. He was a Toy Fox Terrier and his name was "Willie" after Willie Nelson. I called Lee the breeder the next morning and he still had Willie but I needed to talk to Diane first. It was a no go and i called Lee back to inform him. One week later I sat in my truck after putting groceries in it and made the hardest call i ever made in my life. I said to Lee "Do you still have Willie? He said "Yes Ray, I just knew you would call, it was meant to be". This next morning at 5AM i got up and left a note on the kitchen table that said i had gone to Scranton to look at a gun. A white Lie, I guess. When i got to Lee's place Willie and his little sister came running to me and he gave me about 50 kisses. It was love at first sight. He stared at me the whole way home and finally fell asleep in Middletown, NY. When I got home I gave him some water in kitchen and Diane was just waking up and coming down the steps. She came thru TV room and looked in kitchen. When she saw Willie in my arms she was hysterical and sobbed so much. She grabbed Willie and hugged him so tight and of course he gave her lots of kisses. After almost seven years the search was finally over.

My Diane passed away last Christmas and after 12 years Willie passed away the end of March. I never loved anything/anybody in my whole life like Willie. He is in Heaven sitting in Diane's lap. I have had so much grief in the past two years and had resisted all attempts to get another puppy/dog. On Veterans Day i sat on a five gallon bucket and wept over my hunting partners marker and came home. Next day on Sunday morning early my daughter drove over 2hrs from upstate and walked up behind me at the computer. She really scared me. She unzipped her Jacket and there was "Willie Jr." who gave me lots of kisses. How could i say "NO". He saved my life. ---------------------------------------Ray
