Scoping a Remington 511

I suppose that would depend on the 'gunsmith' and his capabilities. In the past some bases have been available that were 'blanks' meaning a flat profile bottom that were milled to fit the specific action profile on which they were to be mounted. A good machinist would cut an perfect (or nearly so) profile and drill the mounting screw holes to match the space available on the receiver.

I had one drilled many years back and used Weaver bases which are still available. They worked out very well and no problems at all with mounting a scope and having no clearance issues with moving the scope for eye relief. Just throwing out an option for you.

    Thanx folks.

Wolfpack,I wouldn't necessarily have to have a rail, bases would look better on this rifle anyway. I was thinking the rail would give me more options. My concern is that Weaver bases (I think) are machined for different receivers, Remington 700, savage 110, etc. Do you remember if you found Weaver bases for the 510 series of rifles?

    Thanx

Well, I found the Weaver online chart and they do have part #s for those front and rear bases. IF they haven't been discontinued, that will be the solution. I'll call them on Monday! Fingers crossed.

510/511/512 use the same mounts. My 510 has a vintage Weaver stamped steel 1-piece base with half-rings for 3/4" scope which is a Weaver B4. The base is stamped N2. Would be ideal if you could locate one. Current Weaver top-mounts are #48042 (front) and 48043 (rear) @ 6 bucks apiece. Also catalogued is a 1-piece side mount rail (48042).

Got em' ordered from Midway. About $18 including shipping and tax. Thanx for all the "expert" advice!

Two options make for the best looking period correct set-up: The Redfield JR-513 one piece base (part # 511124) that uses the turn in style rings in either 3/4" or 1"; and the Redfield adapter base set # 614007 for the .810" radius receivers that use the beautifully made ".22 ring mounts for grooved receivers" in either 3/4" or 1". Would post photos but the forums photo posting process is pre-historic.

@336marlin "photo posting process is pre-historic."

    Copy and paste. Easy peasy.
