That's going to be a fun night, WTG

Pics from one of the nights we went out when it was a little warmer. Had a light issue as we were motoring up the river so had to stop on a gravel bar and do some maintenance.

Brother got a new inverter generator for Christmas so this is its inaugural voyage. His old generator was so loud it was hard to hear anyone speaking. Now we can have a conversation as we gig.

Brother phoned about 30 minutes ago. Cool, sunny day. We are going gigging tonight. For those who don't know, it involves 12 to 14 foot poles with cast iron four prong gigs mounted. A rope is anchored on the handle end and you motor up and downnthe river after dark.

Lights are mounted on the front and sides of the boat that point down into the water. A waist high system of rails is also on the front and sides. The goal is to spear fish by throwing the gig.

Fun to do, frustrating to accomplish the goal. Hoping the water is high enough and the cold front doesn't move in too soon.

Wow, sounds like a great way to end 2023 !!!!!!

Killed a bunch of carp, a few redhorse and a drum or two i believe. Gigging season ends 15 February. Hopefully we'll have a few warmer nights to go again. Water was freezing on the gig poles tonight.

Here's a pic of nephew and his buddy gigging while Brother and I sat in the back. Brother was piloting the boat when I took the pic.

Only had a few sketchy moments. Generator has a sensitive CO2 sensor. When reversing the boat quickly, between the boat motor and the generator fumes it registered too high and shut down. Complete darkness on a swiftly flowing river that has underwater trees and shallow water. We had a blast!

Only rough fish are legal to gig. Trout, bass, catfish, spoonbill are all off limits.

I watched Anthony Bourdain gigging in the Ozarks. Put a man in to a hospital on a boat similar in the last pic.

I live in the Ozarks. The river where we gig is the Current River. I'll have to see if I can find that episode.

Smallest fish we got on NYE was over 5 lbs.

Well, I do believe I indicated in the first post with pics that they were taken when we went during warmer weather. I should have clarified that those were taken in September a few years ago. The last picture with the night sky not visible is from the NYE trip. When we came off the water the air temp was 29. Much colder than the 70's from that September trip.

We wore coveralls/long underwear for the NYE adventure. Gloves were in pockets to be worn when not gigging. While gigging, as long as I was holding my pole in the same spot continually my hands were ok. Once I threw my gig I had to start all over getting a warm spot generated. That is one of the reasons the fish we killed were so big. Small ones weren't worth the cold water on the hands. Just look at them and let them swim away.

Ooops I missed that part. Thanks for clarifying for the slow (me).

Looks like a ton of fun no matter the temp! We use hand warmers up here when it dips below freezing and the task is fairly sedentary.
