I have a soft spot when it comes to fine craftsmanship. A good friend came by a few days ago and brought with him a flintlock rifle he had picked up at a gun show. He had been after me for some time to buy or trade for something I had in my collection. When I studied all of the details on his rifle, it didn't take me too long to make the deal! ☺️
I thought I'd share a few pictures.

That’s quite exquisite. The butt plate reminds me of the butt plates they used on the Remington model 12, but I can tell that it’s not. Did it start out as a manufactured stock or was it all hand crafted along with the art?

The rifle was built from a blank stock of plain maple by a fellow that did very good work at reasonable prices some years ago. The art work was done by a master member of the Horn Makers Guild. His name is William Frankfort or Wild Willy Frankfort, as he is known.
I would call this type of carving scrimshaw. A bit deeper cut than what is done on powder horns, but not quite as pronounced as typical incised wood carving. I was told he did it all with X-Acto Knives.
